A burglar entered a Nutley home Jan. 11 while a resident was upstairs, police said.

The victim was in an upstairs bathroom at the Hartford Drive home around noon when banging was heard downstairs. The victim didn’t respond immediately but noticed dirt at the foot of the stairs when coming down about 15 minutes later. A basement door and a door leading to the yard had been unlocked and opened, and a basement window had been smashed. Dirt was found near where the window had been opened.

The matter remains under investigation.
