Christie Calls Lawmaker 'Arrogant S.O.B.'

Governor gets feisty during town hall meeting in Brick Township

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie branded state Democratic lawmakers liars on Tuesday -- even calling one Bergen County legislator an "S.O.B." -- in the wake of a partisan state budget battle.

Christie vowed to "kick rear ends" to get New Jersey residents a tax cut, appearing at a town hall meeting in Ocean County, the latest stop on his "Jersey Comeback" tour. The governor repeatedly slammed Statehouse Democrats for inaction on his desired 10 percent income tax cuts.

Christie lashed out at State Sen. Paul Sarlo (D-Wood-Ridge), the Democratic chair of the Senate Budget Committee, calling him an "arrogant S.O.B."

The governor took exception to a comment by Sarlo, who said that Democrats were not denying Christie a tax cut, but were instead "putting the cookies on the table and saying 'be good and you can have it later.'"

"He's got to be one arrogant S.O.B. ... to tell the people when they've been good enough [you] get your money back," Christie said.

"I'll fight the fights that are worth fighting," the governor said. "We have a fight on our hands worth fighting now."

An estimated 750 people packed the school gymnasium just four days before the state's fiscal year ends and two days after the Assembly and Senate passed a $31.7 billion 2013 budget on party line votes, with no Republican support.

With the last legislative session before recess scheduled for Thursday, Christie said he'd hound majority Democrats up and down the state all summer if they don't act to reduce residents' tax burden.

"I'm going to point out... that these folks lied," he said. "I'm going to kick their rear ends from one end of the state to the other to get you your tax cut."

Democrats in the Statehouse set aside $183 million in the $31.7 billion spending plan to pay for property tax credits but propose to tie the relief to state revenue figures.

Separate legislation would be needed for the proposed givebacks, but only if the governor's ambitious revenue targets hold through December. Democratic lawmakers have said the state likely cannot afford an across-the-board income tax cut in light of disappointing revenue figures the past few months.

Christie, however, branded legislators as tax-and-spend lawmakers who are not willing to send money back to the residents.

"These Corzine Democrats are all about raising your taxes," he said.

Christie also said he's extended his hand across the aisle to work with Democrats during his tenure, but the current budget process shows him he was "fooled" to think they can work in a bipartisan fashion.

Sen. Barbara Buono, D-Middlesex, said Monday that Christie was playing politics with the budget and failing to lead.

"All the threatening, hostile and inflammatory comments do is escalate tensions rather than defuse them. You get the sense that even as the Senate and Assembly leadership were trying to engage him, the governor was too busy planning his response to even listen," she said on the floor of the Senate.

"The governor remains stubbornly delusional, and sadly, that's been reflected in this budget process," Buono said.

Several members of the public were called upon to speak, with most either praising Christie or asking for his personal help in different matters.

Christie told one Toms River man concerned about the economy that it will be difficult to retain businesses in New Jersey without a lower tax burden.

"We don't create jobs in government. We create the atmosphere for jobs," Christie said. "We're not going to fix the problem overnight... we need to lower income taxes."

The governor will be in Mahwah on Wednesday for the next stop on his tour.

Tax cuts? For whom? And who is going to pay for them? I can tell you -- for the wealthy few, and they will be paid for off the backs of hard working middle and lower class folks. Tax cuts instituted by another Republican Christie -- Christie Todd Whitman -- are what got us into this mess in the first place. Does the current Christie think we are stupid enough to fall for it again?

Mikeeee, you are so off base. It is really pitiful that you blame the unions and minorities when they tend to be at the lower end of the spectrum in terms of economics and political power. Furthermore, things are never that simple, but then scapegoating has always been a popular answer to teh ignorant who are incapable of understanding complex issues. Next time you enjoy your vacation, 40 hour work week, health care and retirement benefits... or that your children are not required to work at age 11 in some sweat shop... or that you get time and a half for overtime... or have safe working conditions... thank those unions.

amazing.....i cant believe all the idiots in the world today....there are 4 things destroying this country today....POLITICS.....HIGH TAXES....UNIONS...and MINORITIES......This guy is trying to lower taxes and the union idiots want to bash him....UNREAL....this country is pretty close to being in the third world category...

Most Republican politicians are contemptuous of the middle class, like Christie. Yes, he's smart and tart-tongued, yet it boggles the mind how they ever get elected since they represent corporations and the super rich instead of regular people.

Its easy to be a political leader because the majority of people are so stupid .
Christie is the first GOV. in over 40 years to deal with the real problems .
State and municpal employers were contributing very little to their pension and healthcare insurance costs and receiving benefits far greater benefits then the private sector has .
NJ had the highest property taxes in the country .Rate increases capped by Christie .
The USA schools are placed in world comparison 25th in science and 18 in math .
due to tenure and no accountability .Christie is bringing about tenure reform and accountability .
The democrats will continue to demonize the wealthy who pay most of NJ taxes . NJ .Corporations taxes are paid by everyone in the price of goods and services provided .
The legislature cry is the millionaires tax because millionaires do not have many votes .
The middle class and wealthy vote with thier feet by moving out of state .
One my friends went from employment in a private college to a state run college
and she says she works only about 25 % of the time and many other employee work less.Their is little accountability or measure of effectiveness in NJ state
and local goverment .

Actually, uh, Mikeeee, the economic and social policies of George Bush, Mitt Romney and the GOP/NRA/Grover Norquists/Big Money buffoons who tell them what to think, say and do are responsible for our slow but sure descent to circumstances that reflect those found in third-world countries. The financial disparity between those who "have" and those who "don't have" is growing at light-speed due to economic policies that clearly favor those who "already have and just want more---income and capital inequality are characteristics shared by third-world societies. Voter suppression efforts by the GOP---please don't embarass yourself by making the laughable claim that voter i.d. laws are done in order to confront "widespread voter fraud"---are intended to disenfranchise millions of voters, almost all of whom are members of racial/cultural minorities and almost all of whom live on the margins---welcome to the third world, where, uh, "democracy" is a word almost always found within quotation marks. Access to quality educational opportunities, access to health-care, relative ability to rise above one's present circumstances, hope for the future, etc., etc.---the measures don't lie when they show how far America has fallen in the last 30 years relative to, in particular, the countries of western Europe, Scandinavia, etc.

Now, if you are saying the rates are going up, how do you explain the $1BN in rebates to be provided because the insurance costs were just unbelievably high relative to the value of payouts.

When Governor Christie held his "town hall" in Hillsborough, I couldn't believe how arrogant he was.

Furthermore, the work at the municipal building was stalled, police overtime accumulated, the DPW spent hours doing the set up, other groups couldn't use the building or parking, etc. We then had the honor of listening to him rail about his opposing party and be rude to our residents.

Hillsborough's taxpayers were footing the bill for what was, in reality, a political rally disguised as a town hall that should have been paid for by candidate Christie.

We can only hope that he does not grace us with his presence again.

From what I have read it seems like the Dems are using Republican ideals. If the Gov. Wants the tax cuts he has to make sure they are paid for as incoming revenue is already low. If incoming revenue does not pick up and the taxes are cut also something is then going to be taken away and I can guarantee the people of NJ won't like that. If the revenue is not there its not there. What are taxpayers going to give up to get that tax cut. They may decide forgoing the tax cut is better than losing some needed service. Temper tantrums don't help the situation.

To Metoo -
Kudos for reminding us of something pretty damn simple that makes a world of difference when doing things that we all do - especially GOVERNORS (you know, relating to people, persuading folks, networking for mutual benefit, compromising when necessary to keep things moving forward, speaking to the people who actually pay your salary, etc.) Civility is a great thing if you actually give a crap about living in a "CIVIL ization" rather than small clannish tribes of like-minded cave-people hellbent of "getting things their way" even if that way is harmful to others, or even to themselves. Last thought ... in this moment in time, anyone who makes a long-term vow to "never raise taxes on my watch" is not just a lout and a fool, he (or she) is the Grand Leader of Louts and Fools who believe that society and services can be maintained (forget the notion of "progressing" ... these clowns could care less - they just want their triple slice of pie before retiring to a place with "crumble-resistant walls") with tax revenues diminishing (inflation doesn't allow for a sustained tax rate, remember?) and costs always, quite naturally, on the rise. Anti-Tax Pledges are pure political propaganda ... bow to those bearing this false promise at your own peril.

Information about corporate taxes in Germany can be found here:

http://www.taxrates.cc/html/germany-tax-rates.html

When all taxes are taken into account, this is as high or higher than taxes here in the US.

Of the two countries, only Switzerland can be said to have a lower corporate tax rate than the US: http://www.chron.com/business/steffy/article/Switzerland-s-the-latest-rage-in-corporate-tax-1618958.php

BUT...Switzerland has a strong social safety net. It also has a health coverage mandate, with sizable government subsidies for those who cannot afford to pay (not the $1000/year vouchers that the Ryan Plan would give Americans to buy $20K of family coverage)

It also has old age, survivor and disability benefits, paid maternity leave, illness and accident protections, and unemployment insurance that also supplements income if your hours are cut, and subsidizes day care. In 2004, social spending was over 18% of GDP vs. 8% for the US. (Source: World Bank)

Of course Switzerland does not sustain a massive military that gets a blank check from the government every year. You want to know where your tax money goes? Cast your gaze upon the Pentagon.

Cannot agree. Cutting taxes always primes business and more revenue flows in.
Counter intuitive, I know, but factual.
Every job a business can add, takes a person from a tax consuming dependent to a tax paying worker. A double good.

Montclair has a $11M surplus one year and a $13M surplus the next in the BOE budget. The BOE started getting nervous there was going to be less $ from the State and possible competition for $ with a charter school. The sleeves were rolled up and some analysis was done on the finances. Because of that, we are seeing almost $25M in surplus in two years. That is a head scratcher folks. Oh and the Superintendent resigns when a fiscal audit is announced. Everyone gets there is waste in NJ numbers. Without a little hardball and analysis, this type of waste will continue. I guess when the status quo gets challenged, people resort to blogging like we are seeing here. If you don't like Christie, give specifics on his positions.

Sorry, David, but companies only hire people of those people can make them more money. It has nothing to do with taxes. When people do not have jobs, or when the wage base has been lowered so there is no money for discretionary purposes, or there is no job security, people do not consume. Where there is no demand, there is no reason to expand a business. Growth comes from the demand side, not the taxation side. Companies do not hire out of generosity because dollar bills are spilling out of their pockets, they do it to make more money. No demand, no more money, and no hiring. It's very simple.

Simply not true. Corporations have not been more profitable in America than they are now in the last fifty + years. And yet, we have median incomes of American households down some 39%. Never mind that we do not have enough jobs for the applicant pool by a factor of nearly 5 to 1.

That is not the reality. Check it out. Big businesses are not job creators they are the pay the CEO more money by cutting jobs of the middle class workers and export the jobs out to foreign countries. The job creators have been small businesses that have kept jobs in this country and not sent them out to foreign countries. The job creators have been the 99% who have supported Made in the USA and kept jobs here. Do not try to fool people by saying big businesses are the job creators it is not true at all. Keeping jobs in this country creates jobs. Not corporations who fire US workers and outsource their jobs to pay CEOs outrageous sums of money to do it.

you have to laugh at all the Christie haters... the states with the highest taxes are the ones going bankrupt. Why the left are so stupid I can't figure out, is that why they are called the left and have a jackass as their party symbol? You don't raise taxes to get out of debt, you cut spending on waste. You don't run up your credit cards and then go and try to find a higher paying job, odds are against you in finding one. Many people, states, and countries have tried this theory and everytime it fails. Yes Christie can be a bit over the top, but the arrogance of sharpton, Obama, Corzine, Pelosi, Reed.. and many others is also sickening, so fight fire with fire.

B&B, Interesting articles attached to your comment. However the articles look at the income and corporate tax burdens. I believe one must evaluate the overall tax burden, which includes property taxes, to get a true look. And it appears that Basel, Switzerland has a lower overall tax burden (hard as that is to believe). Why else would Roche move this operation overseas.
If the overall tax burden was significantly lower in New Jersey, I feel Roche might have had less incentive to pack up and go home.

But my comment (as I suspect you must know) had nothing to do with positions. It has to do with Christy's utterly offensive manner. Whether it's an Iraq vet or the state Senate Majority leader or just an ordinary voter, the man has absolutely no sense of dignity and no shred of decency. And the fact that others also have flaws is completely irrelevant. I know you know exactly what I mean, and if you are honest, you'll recognize it.

It wasn't the tax cut that screwed everything up, It was the lack of support to cut spending, and the decades of mafia style public cronyism. 100+ public employee's at the passaic valley sewerage commission were fired for hiring family members and taking home large salaries, all of the managers were democrats that had held some political office in a small town somewhere and they all were abusing their position on the taxpayers dime. Kevin Keogh a West Orange and Roseland Politician plead guilty a few days ago to those charges and all the others will follow, his wife worked for the Roseland school system and stepped down shortly after her husbands arrest. This is just 1 place out of the thousands of public jobs that are loaded with this kind of scum. I am not thrilled about the economy tanking, but a lot of good things have come out of it, and we finally are paying attention to how Democrats screw the middle class while pretending to be for the middle class.

Property Taxed 2 Death

12:00 am on Friday, June 29, 2012

it's nowhere near "in proportion". Lets look at ex Gov Whitman who owns 2 ‘farms’ close to each other. The ‘tree farm’ is about 100 acres and last time I looked paid only about $100 property taxes for 99 acres of it.

Her other 200+ acre ‘farm’ is 'preserved' but did have cows, chicken’s etc. To get them farm assessed she ‘sold’ $500 in firewood and $500 in meat to her brother.

Asked of Whitman, she answered “Everything we raise is strictly for the Whitman family consumption”

Only farms can lose money every year and keep IRS deductions. What we had/have with Whitman (and with lots of other wealthy's ) is 2 huge taxpayer subsidized estates. Not only that, but considering all expenses are deductible including buying her cows, sheep, chickens etc., feeds it, raises it, pays feed and vet bills, pays a farmhand who eventually slaughters and butcher them for the Whitman’s to eat, plus all costs of her small veggie garden, again tended to by a farmhand, deducts the cost of tractors plows tillers and all ’farm equipment’ plus buys gas for farm use that has no road tax on it like the gas we buy. Of course she'd never put that gas in her car would she?

In plain English, we taxpayers paid her for the ‘farm’, subsidize her property taxes, her grocery bill, gasoline and even her servants!

BTW her hubby moved his main business to the Cayman Islands to avoid all NJ and federal taxes. Please tell me how that’s “in proportion”?

Let's try something different. Shrink government, move all functions to lowest level of governement possible...

Drop the two party ideaoligy (it only serves the politicians) and let's all get together and ONLY fund those areas of governement where a reasonable majority agree... take away some of the power we cede to the federal government and redeploy it to the State, County and Municipal level, where 'we the people' can maintain oversight.

Check out the funding for the Montclair 2012 campaign on line at NJELEC. Over 70% of the reported contributors for their campaign came from people or organizations outside of Montclair. Large amounts came from Unions. I'm not sure how the pay to play rules help protect us when the teacher's union donates $8,200 to a campaign to get 1 Union President & 2 others with big union positions (or former positions) elected.

you give people tax cuts to stay in town or in state, start a business or use that money to spend at a business, which will keep it in business so that they can hire you, someday you can have your own business or get hired at another business that might pay you more thanks to the tax cuts that helped create the business that was started from a small business. The # 1 reason businesses fail in NJ is high property taxes, corporate taxes, wage taxes, and workmans compensation(lets call it a state tax since its a regulation mandated by the state). I think I see a common theme here. Taxes kill jobs not republicans.

The Office of Legislative Services is predicting that state tax revenues will fall $1.3 billion short of the Christie administration's latest projections. Approximately $635 million of the shortfall is for the fiscal year that begins on July 1 and $668 million is for the current budget that ends on June 30.

Hi Darling,
You sadly forget how the Bush admin was warning Barney Frank Lover about the housing bubble and all this free loan cr*p was going to bite us all in the A** ,Barney hide a Frank and his crew of Frank Shakers told the American public that Bush was wrong and that the housing market was in good shape. Little did he know that his own people were going to pick the scab off the artery, hammering how the housing market is slowing so they could blame Bush for a housing slow down which would give Obama or Hillary some traction in the general election, what it did was cause investors big and small to stop putting anymore money into the housing market, and with dem regulators pushing banks to lend to not so worthy applicants for nearly 7 years, those buyers now became underwater looking for a way out, the combination of people fleeing their mortgages and investors not putting money in is what caused the economy to tank world wide. The Libs all thought that putting near poverty people into homes was going to help them get votes for the next 2 presidential terms especially from the latino group but since that blew up in their face, they of course had to find someone to blame which is typical of any democrat, (if you are married to one or know one you know what I mean), and the strategy has now focused on Immigration, healthcare, and gay rights to try to build up the voting block, they know they have no clue how to create jobs so lets see what else sticks.

As of 2011, we had 14 Chiefs and Captains. The average gross salary was $132k. Several benefitted from over an 16% increase in gross salary from the 2010 year.
Total fire staff (non-clerical) at this time was 79 with an averaged salary of approximately $97k.

It's not my fault people do it for free, according to all the libs on here, without raising taxes your houses will burn, obviously the libs must be wrong as usual if people are fighting fires for free... come to think of it i think more houses burn down in towns with paid firemen then towns with volunteer i will have to look up the stats on that.

All you have to do is read all of my posts and you will see I am on your side. I just so happened to get paid for what I do, and agree that tax cuts are in order, waste spending has to stop, and I debunk the charge by the libs that your house will burn down if you don't raise taxes. Clearly free firemen are just as effective as paid, just like $50,000 teachers are just as effective if not more than $90,000 teachers. Libs like to make up stuff to make you think that you wont survive without public paid teachers, firemen, and cops, but we see all the time that private sector can get better quality then government paid. .

Leadership is not measured by how loud one shouts or how one calls others stupid names. In my experience these types of people are trying to deflect others from the truth of their own inadequacy. For me, he is an older, larger but similarly skilled version of the old schoolyard bully. Its very sad that parents all other this state have to explain to their children how a person who acts this way and talks this way could become governor. Kids, don't grow up to be like Gov. And for the voters here in New Jersey, we have no one else to blame but ourselves, lets remember that at the next governor's election.

Nose I agree with ya. Government keeps us apart to preserve themselves by creating an enemy where none exists.

I'm not a union member and disagreed with many union actions. but I do thank them for as they say 'Making America Strong" because without the unions we would be working 18 hour days 7 days week for $1.50 an hour

Government made unions a scapegoat when they passed all the trade agreements that sent US Jobs overseas. They took payoffs to write and pass the laws them that sent jobs overseas, then blamed Unions for the loss of jobs. But it was mainly because strict environmental laws here were too costly & business did not want to comply, plus by relocating the business overseas they avoid business property taxes, business & personal income taxes and high real estate taxes which are but some of the reasons they moved overseas, just as former Gov Whitmans low life hubby john moved his main business to the Cayman Islands before her re election so he could avoid all NJ and US taxes from that business

Government and manufacturers have successfully now made China the scapegoat for "stealing American jobs" that it took the direct work of several presidents and congress to pass the trade agreements that sent jobs to 3rd world countries.

US Business fooled most people into blaming faulty products not on them but on China, who manufactures products designed by US Companies to their specifications and using their quality control specifications & their inspectors

From: http://www.njspotlight.com/stories/12/0130/0238/

Property taxes are eating up a larger share of family income under Gov. Chris Christie than under previous governors, primarily due to a sharp reduction in direct property tax relief over the past two years. In fact, net property taxes are 20 percent higher under Christie than they were when Democrat Jon Corzine left office two years ago.

With property tax credits and rebates included, the average New Jersey homeowner paid $7,519 in net property taxes last year -- compared with $6,244 in 2009 -- according to statistics released by the state Department of Community Affairs on Friday.

That $1,275 increase represents a 20.4 percent hike in net property taxes -- which is the amount of money that the average New Jersey household actually pays in property taxes after property tax rebates or property tax credits are subtracted.

true, but one of the biggest expenses in many towns is educating children born of illegal immigrants who do not speak English. In some towns like Lakewood, eliminating illegal immigrants kids should easily cut education costs by and thus dramatically reducing property taxes by 50%.

Gov needs to enact some Arizona laws here in NJ and help us all instead of ignoring the major problem affecting NJ and many other US States.

Education reform is one thing he seems to be working on, only it's too little effort and not enough time spent on it as far as I am concerned.

Screw the income tax cut, few people will notice any savings at all while property tax relief will help everyone from dirt poor to mega wealthy

Read "Twilight of the American Civilization" and you will see that the middle class is on its way out. All of the pieces are in place and it's only a matter of time. One of the four criteria is a wider schism between the upper class and everyone else.

"In a nutshell, America is the laughing stock of the world. This book, written before the tragedy of 9/11 offers a cornucopia of how far we have fallen as we have become more and more enamored with corporate capitalist consumer behavior - we have embraced McWorld. We are stupid people: anesthetized on shopping, mindless web surfing, infotainment, political scandals, rampant inequality and sporting spectacles, but believe that all this corporate techno-babble has propelled us into a higher level as a culture. It has not. And we are in decline as a country and entering a new Dark Age. And yes - there will be light at the end of the tunnel and there will be a rebirth maybe in a century or two, but now we must do what we can to preserve the good of what we were and wait for the opportunity to rise again."

As for Christie, taking his tasks off the table for a moment, there are ways of doing things without denigrating others. There is so much of that demonstrated here by both side of the political spectrum and reading this thread ended up being a lousy way to begin my morning.

No wonder so many children are bullies. It is modeled in your homes first. What a travesty to live in a world filled with so much hatred and scorn.

I voted for Christy. I don’t know if I’ll do that again.

On his plus side is he's doing some good. On the negative side he has NOT done anywhere near enough.

He needs to keep his ass here in NJ and forget Romney or highlighting his profile all over the USA and do something about PROPERTY TAXES YOU FRIGGIN IDIOT!

He also needs to follow Arizona’s Gov. Jan Brewer’s example and do something about ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.

ILLEGAL immigrants cost NJ taxpayers billions each year for gang activities, prostitution, drugs and crime. That would include police, prosecutors, public defenders, judges, juries, the Violent Crimes Compensation Board, Ambulance, hospital emergency treatment for the victims of violent crimes by some ILLEGAL immigrants

Also consider the high costs of education for all the kids born by ILLEGAL immigrants plus the following free charity health care they receive. They mostly use the very expensive ER for minor injuries, colds and don’t forget those 4-7 babies you see them with, each one costs tax payers for their free prenatal, birthing, and post natal care that’s followed up with welfare, food stamps, free land line phones and free cel phones, subsidized electric and heat and also housing.

Conservatively, the total dollar savings to taxpayers per year could exceed $16 BILLION and result in a major property tax cut. Seems to me this is a good place to start saving money that's been ignored

After he does all that, do you think he's going to trickle down the savings to you?No buddy it's going into him and his friends big fat pockets. Yes the illegal immigrants cost the taxpayers millions of dollars, but all the politicians, public employees, public schools and greedy corporations all cost the taxpayers the same. I guess you decided to give the blacks a break this time. You people always have to find someone to pick on. When America was stolen from the Indians, where were you talking about deporting the Europeans? When the slaves were working for free ,where were you talking about free labor costing the African family? But after all the hard work is done, people lives have been turned upside down, you enjoy the fruits of their misery. What you reap is what you sow, if you think it's going up, no it's only going down. So keep finding someone to blame for the demise of America, the demise was written thousands of years ago.

To those who think that the "rich" don't pay enough NJ income tax - here is the tax liability at the following taxable income points:

$50,000 NJ tax = $1,270

$100,000 NJ tax = $4,244

$250,000 NJ tax = $13,799

$500,000 NJ tax = $29,724

And you wonder why people with any means are fleeing the state, a person with taxable income of $500,000 is bearing 23 times the tax burden of the person with $50,000 of taxable income, yet they make only 10x the taxable income. I can hardly wait to leave the state.

While I don't see much constructiveness in rocco's request that Clarke leave, if it is meant as a means shutting down the dialogue, neither you nor I have any idea how much tax either rocco or clarke pay or how that relates to how much he gets from the government in terms of services. Moreover, even if we knew those things exactly we could not determine the relationship of those things to the question of how much he contributes to society on the simple basis of how much he brings home as income.

rocco makes an excellent point, to the degree that he is addressing the alarmist claim that higher paid people leaving will lessen our tax revenue. This idea makes no sense in light of the fact that they are paid highly, largely, on account of the fact that they are here.

Consider clarke's figures more fully. $50,000 income after NJ taxes = $48,730. $100,000 income after NJ taxes = $95,756. $250,000 income after NJ taxes = $236,201. $500,000 income after NJ taxes = $470,276. One thing that is painfully obvious, is that a higher income means getting to have more, regardless of taxes.

The question of "fairness" - in terms of who ought to get to have how much and why - is entirely unresolved based on considerations of the percentages of larger numbers come to proportionately higher numbers. People with lesser incomes produce goods and services too, and it makes no sense to think that the simple matter of attaining wealth is synonymous with the matter of creating wealth.

Comment_arrow

John Galt

2:07 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012

Ridgewood mom attaining wealth is creating wealth when it's done a voluntary basis, ie not the government taking it under threat of force. Many of NJ's wealthiest people have already left, and more are leaving. We are losing scientists in Pharma, financial folks and other groups due to our high taxes. As "telecommuting" becomes increasingly more robust and cost effective, the trend will continue. Over the past 12 months 20% of my staff moved to 0% income tax states, just yesterday another engineer asked if she could become a "virtual employee" too.

We should be embracing policies which attract people to move here, not the other way around. We need to stop embracing class warfare.

Comment_arrow

Ridgewood Mom

2:51 pm on Saturday, July 7, 2012

Wealth is not created simply because a person has attained it. Wealth comes from people being engaged in the generation of goods and services, voluntary or not and regardless of whether it is taking place in private or public sectors.

Taxation is law. Not paying tax is criminal. If you are serious in presenting a moral argument that taxation is wrong on the basis that it involves a "threat of force," then consistency requires that you apply the same logic to all other crimes. Not paying rents or mortgages, stealing and killing, etc. Or else you are just trying to come up with a way of getting away with something that is quite obviously morally wrong.

I agree that we need to stop embracing "class warfare." It is humanely fundamental that we address the basic needs of all members of our shared economy. Particularly we must address the needs of those who are struggling under the current economic climate, rather then giving more to those who have been profiting at everyone else's expense. It is not just those members of the most privileged social classes who should be getting special tax breaks at the expense of everyone else.

I'm not sure that I fully agree with John, but he has a point. Unless it's stolen or taxed, a strong argument can be made income tax is theft, just because a government says its moral doesnt mean it is. Congress can pass a law against gravity, but I assure you that you will not start floating if it did.

Wealth acquisition is wealth creation. The only exceptions of money transfer are not are charity or inheritance.

You talk about being against class warfare then proceed to engage in it. You talk about the basic needs of all members of the shared economy, often referred to as the public good. The deficit of your logic is obvious to many, it requires some people to spend the money of others against their will. Most people agree taking 100% of someone's work is slavery, what percentage isn't?

Sort of like ghettos. Besides allowing them to culturally identify as separate from people in other communities, making it easier for them to dehumanize the "other," such communities have the added benefit of serving as property tax shelters by allowing very wealthy persons to pay much lower property taxes then they would be paying if they lived in most of the rest of the state.

On the other hand, state taxes tax everyone according to the same tax system which means proportionately more taxes for persons with very high incomes. So cutting state taxes gives a bigger share to persons who are already very wealthy. For such persons, property taxes aren't such an issue.

For the state of NJ to succeed with its economy and income class balance, Christie needs to give back to the lower class, lower taxes for the middle class and raise taxes for the wealthy. The enormous disparity of each class is really disturbing. Christie also needs to lower property taxes in this state because they're too exceedingly high. When will Christie wake up and realize that he is hurting the economy of this state? He is not without blame for the outgoing crises facing the state today!

We are missing the point here: Gov. Christie's sanity. No public figure in his right mind
willingly becomes a national embarassment. It is obvious that his lack of self control goes beyond his physical condition, it's a symptom of a severely disturbed mind. He needs help.

And what does it say about a subculture of people who interpret bully talk and a lack of willingness to involve oneself in civil dialogue as amusing, or even somehow noble?

Maria Please, You can't be serious? he is doing his schtick, get over the weight thing, God there are a bunch of snivelling little prebuecent sub adults here. Oh! lets bring back FLIM FLAM Florio, he can ram another 2.8 billion dollar tax hike thru like he did in 1990. ( His Pre election rant) "No New Taxes) how absolutely brilliant. Thought he was a Boxer, but got his face broken from a punch, decided to be a Politician and still got punched out..... Christie has to break new ice, yes he is ugly sometimes but in the end I hope it will pan out for both sides. He could have walked out for the rep. nomination, he didn't, that speaks volumes for me. We will see.

Christie's cancellation of ARC is a mistake of biblical proportions in my opinion.

The only thing biblical about the ARC tunnel would have been the tax hikes necessary to cover the inevitable cost overruns and NJ's portion of the construction projects for a project that NYC should have always been on the hook for.

Why should NYC be on the hook for it? They aren't the ones that commute into the city. I really don't think that many New Yorkers take public transport into New Jersey.

Sure RedRider. Its much better to allow a private corporation to monopolize commuter toll collection into the city, putting money in their own pockets, then for NJ citizens to put money into the government that provides them with services.

NYC should be paying for at least half b/c the tunnel is going to NYC, duh. The jobs those people are commuting to are in NYC, duh. The taxes paid by the corporations those people work for go to NYC, duh. The economic activity and jobs that creates also in part is in NYC, duh. Ergo, NYC who also benefits from this tunnel should be on the hook for paying for it.

What private corporation collects tolls in the NYC area? The Port Authority is no private corporation, duh.

Excuse me, Redrider765, but after those people earn that money in NYC duh, where do they go home on the train and spend it all, duh?

Ten per cent of the tolls should go to my work.

Wait a second, with all the lawns you mow in my neighborhood, you seem to be doing just fine!

I am doing just fine, especially when there is little rain and I still cut grass even though it's not needed. It's sort of like most government work and programs.

Why is it that libertarians sound so much better when I have a job and can afford to feed my family?

Could it be you feel that your lack of planning is an excuse to steal from someone else? Its going to rain, have a rainy day fund.

I fully support Christie, he turned the state around. Although he cut teachers, he made teacher tenure tougher to get as well.
