Local Newborn Dies After Sustaining Injuries
Parents Have Been Charged with Endangerment; Investigation Continuing
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the death of a four-week-old girl, a spokesperson, Katherine Carter, said today.
Emergency medical workers responded to the Belleville home of the girl's parents on Nov. 15 on a report the girl was non-responsive and rushed her to Clara Maass Medical Center. The infant, Lilia Roman, who had suffered injuries including a broken arm and retinal hemorrhaging, was later taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where she was placed on life support. Hospital staff determined the child was also brain dead, the prosecutor's office said.
On Nov. 16, the girl's parents, James Roman Jr., 29, and Vanessa Roman, 27, were both charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child.
The baby was removed from life support today and pronounced dead at 1:19 p.m. An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, the prosecutor's office said. The parents may face additional charges.
It could not immediately be determined if the parents were still in custody today.
Editor's note: Ms. Roman worked as a freelancer for Patch in Belleville for several weeks earlier this year.
