Man Arrested for Thefts from Churches
Nutley Police arrest Belleville man for stealing copper items from Holy Family Church.
A thief proved that nothing is sacred in crime - when he was arrested for stealing copper gutters and leaders from a church in Nutley.
Police received a call about a man stealing gutters and leaders from a church on Brookline Avenue in Nutley on Sat., May 26.
Police had received reports of similar incidences of theft that took place on May 22. With the help of a witness, they identified a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo that had been seen at the church.
Police traced the vehicle back to a Brick resident and discovered that the vehicle was being used by family member residing in Belleville. Police later that day arrested 51 Joseph McConnon of Belleville and charged him with two counts of theft.
Police Commissioner Alphonse Petracco disheartened by the act said that it is a sad day when criminals resort to stealing from local churches. Police Chief John Holland commended the investigating officer and the unidentified witness that made this arrest possible.
