Man Arrested for Thefts from Churches

Nutley Police arrest Belleville man for stealing copper items from Holy Family Church.

A thief proved that nothing is sacred in crime - when he was arrested for stealing copper gutters and leaders from a church in Nutley.

Police received a call about a man stealing gutters and leaders from a church on Brookline Avenue in Nutley on Sat., May 26.

Police had received reports of similar incidences of theft that took place on May 22. With the help of a witness, they identified a 1995 Chevy Monte Carlo that had been seen at the church.

Police traced the vehicle back to a Brick resident and discovered that the vehicle was being used by family member residing in Belleville. Police later that day arrested 51 Joseph McConnon of Belleville and charged him with two counts of theft.

Police Commissioner Alphonse Petracco disheartened by the act said that it is a sad day when criminals resort to stealing from local churches. Police Chief John Holland commended the investigating officer and the unidentified witness that made this arrest possible.

I hope he's prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
To steal from the church is to steal from the helpless.

wow!! I know this mans family very well!! they are very dedicated to the Catholic church... they must be Devastated! I'm sure he has been through alot, but he was well aware of what he was doing. We all are dealt with struggles in our life some worse then others..but that does not give anyone the right to turn to drugs and steal. especially when you have young children and a family. I Pray for Him and Hopefully this is Gods way of helping him

How do the expletives from Mr. Mc Connon's comment above get through the censors, but my questions to the editor, Ms. Moore do not?

How true! - when you comment upon the very suspect activities and political associations of all things Belleville, these are classified as personal attacks by the Patch management and deleted. But nearly 18 hours after flagging Mr. McConnon's choice of words as inappropriate they still remain visible.
