A Belleville man was arrested New Year’s Day after trying to break into a storage unit, township police said.

Joseph Damico, 38, was trying to pry open the unit, which is located at a Joralemon Street apartment complex, around 9:35 pm when a resident of the complex spotted him. Damico allegedly pushed the witness aside and fled from the scene on foot.

He was captured a short time later about a block from the scene and identified by the witness, police said. He was charged with robbery and transported to the Essex County jail in Newark.
