Verizon Promises The Internet Will "Change Forever" On Monday

The company had previously announced they would begin offering Internet service with a maximum download speed of 300 megabits per second this month.

A video uploaded to Verizon's Youtube account Friday promised the Internet will "change forever" Monday but does not specify how, leading to speculation about changes in service for one of Bergen County's most popular high-speed Internet providers.

Verizon announced last month that their FiOS brand would begin offering a new 300 megabits per second (Mbps) service, which is twice the speed of their current fastest option.

A second video uploaded Friday features FiOS Internet Director John Schommer discussing the forthcoming 300 Mbps option, which will also include a maximum upload speed of 65 Mbps.

Technology news website The Verge reported the new service will cost $204.99 per month. The 15 Mbps service, which most customers use, will see a $10 per month price increase, according to the report.

When Verizon began offering FiOS Internet in 2004, the fastest speed available was 30 Mbps.

"No one had an idea how anyone could use that kind of bandwidth," Schommer said in the video.

Schommer said the increase in devices streaming data in the average home warrants higher speed Internet connections.

The reason that you don't have it is because Verizon doesn't want you. For byears they have been cherry-picking communities where they feel that they can make the most money. I wouldn't do business with this company under any circumstances.

So a Race to the bottom is better? Verizon has made Internet better state wide. They have improved the markets they are in. We wouldn't even have dsl or 3G Internet if let government innovate.

Neither would I, as this company promoted free 19" HD flat screen TVs for customers who signed up for service, but never fulfilled their promotion, as they covered up a scam and false advertising, by saying that 9000 TVs were on back order, but in actuality, they never had any intention of giving out those TVs, but just sucking customers into a very expensive contract under fraudulent circumstances. I dropped Verizon Fios as many others have and continue to do so everyday!!

You need a 19' TV? They sell them for $50 at Costco. FiOS has proved better than Time Warner by miles.

I'll still be using fios, but I don't like their tone... when some company says they are going to change the internet forever I get worried.

I've had Verizon Fios for 3 years and love the service. I've tried them all (Directv, Comcast, Cablevision, etc. over the years) and Verizon, by far, offers the best service. Having Comcast is like living in the dark ages.

As far as the new, faster internet speeds...this is not something the average consumer needs. It's all marketing against the other cable companies to say "we're faster than you". But the reality is most people have no need for this.

The average consumer doesn't need such high speeds yet. But as the web standard shifts to accommodate this new higher speed, it will soon become a necessity to have this new speed in order to function meaningfully on the web, and in society.

Verizon Customer Service is AWFUL. I refuse to give my money to a company like Verizon who could NOT care less if I am a customer. They lost me years ago over $5, & poor customer service. Verizon decides to run their company that way. I decide not to support it.

To each their own. I've been a Cablevision customer for almost 20 years. They've always treated me great (i.e. extending me promo's which I wasn't truly eligible), plus I've never had a service problem.

I had the worst experience with CableVision, I think they had too many subscribers in our town, which resulted in lots of pixelation and slow or no internet access. Their customer service was never able to help.

Switched to Verizon for FiOS and will never go back.

I've had Fios since it was available in New Milford. I switched from Cablevision because they would not take the time to figure out why my service was at half of its potential. I called Fios, and they came within an hour and had me up and running at more than double the speed. The increased speed is more for hard core gamers, than most anyone else.

I've had both Cablevision and FIOS. Verizon customer service is the worst. My experience was like Neil's. Was promised a gift card that never arrived. Sales person would not give their name or employee number so they could not be identified at a later date then gave a deal they would not honor. Scheduled installation for a day and never showed up. Gave the installation to a private contractor who did such a bad job another Verizon worker needed to come out and fix it. The nicest person was the one I spoke to when I cancelled my contract. But of course they didn't send my check for unused service as promised, I had to call again and remind them months later. Meanwhile Cablevision has always been professional and honored their contracts. If they were a little late for an appointment they comped me a month's service. The Cablevision installer even cleaned a clogged gutter as he was replacing a cable. The only good thing I can say about Verizion is that they keep Cablevision's prices lower.

Had Cablevision early 2000's. Slow Internet, lots of pixelation and constant service interruption or lost of service when the wind was over 20 mph. Cablevision claims it's the cabling in the house because they did not install it. Once FIOS was available I jumped to make the switch based on other users recommendations. Cablevision's response to me leaving, "go, you'll be back". 7 years later? Could not be happier. Verizon keep our subscription pricing close to current promos and I got a $300 gift card at the last renewal for being a good customer. BTW, service is great with the cable I installed myself and I still hear Cablevision customers in my area complaining when the wind starts to go over 20 mph.

I had Time Warner but then they had that thunderstorm in which the power went out. The internet and tv went out as well. I understand that they may have been busy fixing people's internet and tv, but it took them 3 days to fix mine while my friends who had FiOS had it fixed by 6 o clock that same day. When I threatened to drop Time Warner they didn't even care, so I dropped them and haven't looked back since.

Cool, so if you want the higher speed you can pay MUCH more, but if you just want to keep the current speed, your choice is to pay ONLY $10 more.

Internet will change forever? Instead of mindlessly repeating the company hype - make the headline: "Verizon announces $10 price increase, hiding it in some pseudo news about 300 mpbs service"

But, THAT would take REAL reporting...

Tom, this wasn't about timing because the relevant fact was in your story already:
"The 15 Mbps service, which most customers use, will see a $10 per month price increase"

This was was about picking out from your own text what REALLY effects 99% of your readers and making THAT the headline/tenor of the story, instead of acting as cheerleaders just because Verizon's ad agency discovered YouTube to hype up a P/R campaign.

Don't get dazzled by the pre-processed, hand-fed glitter of YouTube - usually the real "story" is in seemingly boring data that a journalist first has to sift through to discover it (that's why it's intentionally hidden!).

When Verizon finally gets Fios to the rest of Newark then they can say they are doing something, I was a DSL customer when it first came out and they have been dangeling the Fios carrot for far to long. I guess they don't care about people living in the poorer areas but I for one would like some relief from the hold of Cablevision.

I ordered fios a year ago this is my 2nd year, I have to call all the time to have my bill corrected. when I sign on for the 2yrs no contract, I was suppose to have it for 89.99 for the 2 years (not including the boxs) but every month my bill would go up , and I had not made any changes to my service. after this year (the 2 yrs) I am going back to Optimum Cablevision...... And I hope that this time they don't botch up my bill either....

Cablevision is horrendous! Was a subscriber of them for 15+ years. Always had pixilation, service cut outs and 1 Mbps down (paying for 10 Mbps). Was told, "It's an old house and needs a complete rewire" when the tech came out (multiple times)...so I dealt with it. Fios came out around the time Cablevision had those problems with ABC 7 so I decided to switch. From day 1 I have NEVER had ANY problem with FIOS. And that old cabling?? Right, well the genius techs at Cablevision back fed a signal into my house wiring causing pixilation and that was the cause of the issues according to the Verizon techs, which I believe as they did not change a single cable in the house. Would never even consider going back! Playing devils advocate, yes the customer service is absolutely terrible (at Verizon). Unhelpful and un-knowledgeable. They are a complete waste who read from pre-written scripts. You'd honestly be better off googling your issue....in the years since we've had Fios though, we've had maybe MAYBE 3 outages (Tv) for no longer than 2 hours, we pay for the 25 Mbps down and get 30-35 Mbps down on a consistant basis (cant even remember an outage on the internet. Honestly dont think theres been one at all).......Of course individual experiences vary, but overall my experience with Cablevision was a nightmare.

Who cares about customer service and company direction? Fios offers a FAR better product and is cheaper...this is a no brainer...complainers are just not willing to adapt to changes in technology...anyone posting on cablevisions behalf must be over 40 and afraid of change

Are you comparing apples and apples? Both companies have very attractive sign-up rates for new customers, but once that expires, and you include all the fees, taxes, set-top box fees, etc., I don't think there's really a difference cost-wise.

OK. JVESP. I am over 40 but I have had both services. I will stay with cablevision at our current rate. If FIOS/VERIZON can do better, I might hold my nose & switch. But I detest poor service. I guess we will only see Jvesp at Walmart because that is where the low prices are.

You must have overlooked the FAR better product part. I would pay 50 more a month just to have fios but knowing its cheaper makes evrytime i use the internet and watch tv feel like christmas....faster internet...cleaner picture....faster, more user friendly, nicer interface, more channels, more hd channels, nfl network, redzone...oh and wait its cheaper too!?!?! I have the fastest internet they offer, every single channel they offer, multi room dvr, two additional hd boxes and only pay 150 a month.....cablevision cant compete at all....i spent 10 minutes explaining to the cablevision salesman who came to my house why its a non compete and how they can improve their service....and for the record i dont shop at walmart.

How'd you get all that for so cheap??

Has anyone else been getting sales people coming around to their door trying to get you to switch to Cablevision with the promotion "ending this month"? I have a feeling the promotion will show up again every month. They offer a good deal, cost wise, but you get what you pay for, right?

They're offering Free International Calling and 1 of our favorite international channels for free, and the silver package for $115 for 2 years.

Verizon used the hype of this new package to cover up the fact that they are raising their prices on some of their most popular and affordable packages and it seems so far that it has worked.
