Sakura in Millburn scooped up the top spot in Patch's poll for the best sushi in Millburn, Maplewood and South Orange. Sakura won out with its consistent and tasty traditional sushi — as well as its Japanese noodle dishes, teriyakis and tempuras and fusion entrees. Sakura was followed by Ariyoshi in South Orange — which is well known for its giant, room-dividing fish tanks as well as special rolls with names like Superman and Dynamite — and Sapporo in Millburn which serves everything from bento boxes to boats of sushi and sashimi. Samurai Sushi in Millburn and Mt. Fuji in Maplewood tied for fourth.
Livingston residents have spoken and Patch readers have chosen Zen Japanese Cuisine in our latest Reader's Choice Best of poll as the place for authentic sushi and sashimi. Located on Eisenhower Parkway, Zen Japanese is known for their exemplary service and fresh fish. Diners enjoy their cuisine in a relaxed, traditional Japanese garden setting, with the opportunity to enjoy their meal outside as well. Runner-up Samurai Sushi also presents attractive displays, especially with its 'Love Boat" special, a sushi dinner for two served up in a decorative Japanese sailboat.
Bloomfield has spoken and Aki Japanese Cuisine Restaurant tops the list for readers’ favorite sushi in town, followed by Momoya as a close second. Aki's is located at 1273 Broad Street near the bend at West Passaic Avenue. Aki’s sophisticated menu features a distinctive, varied assortment of Japanese favorites like Tako Su (octopus with lemon vinegar sauce), Grilled Salmon Roulade and Sushi Pizza. For customers who prefer cooked dishes, there is a wide variety menu items like noodle soup, Japanese curry rice or Teriyaki chicken, vegetable, beef, shrimp or salmon.
Nori in Caldwell floated to the top of the poll. Nori, located at 406 Bloomfield Ave., offers sushi and sashimi a la carte, as well as an assortment of rolls and hand rolls. Some avid fans will tell you it’s their extensive list of specialty rolls that keep them coming back for more. And what's not to love about their “hyperlocal” rolls—the Caldwell has shrimp tempura and tuna on top, and the Verona features salmon and avocado with spicy tuna.
Verona and Cedar Grove residents have spoken and Patch readers have chosen Kyoto Sushi III of Cedar Grove in our latest Reader’s Choice Best of poll as the place for authentic sushi and sashimi. Located at 557 Pompton Ave., #B, Kyoto Sushi III provides an authentic Japanese restaurant ambiance while creating fresh specialty sushi rolls and entrees.
The newly-opened Slate Restaurant and Bar scooped up the top spot in Patch's poll for the best sushi in West Orange. Slate opened its doors earlier this month but seems to have won over the town in mere weeks. The venue provides modern Japanese cuisine and includes international food and bar food such as burgers and french fries. Slate was closely followed by Kim's Sushi, that was just a handful of votes shy from the top spot.
Located in the Ironbound section of Newark, Sushi House is a cozy restaurant with 10 tables and a sushi bar. In the Nutley-Belleville area, Sushiya and Sake Sushi in Nutley were nearly tied. Sushiya offers a terrific variety of sushi, including the Flower roll, which features crab, tuna and avocado. The restaurant also has a wide variety of vegetable rolls. People who’ve dined there say the sushi is fresh and well-made.
