Calling Singers. Auditions to be Held for New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera Chorus.

Lucine Amara, Artistic Director of the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera (Verismo Opera), announces open auditions for the Verismo Opera Chorus will be held on Wednesdays, September 11, 18 and 25 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at 44 Armory Street in Englewood, New Jersey.

Male and female vocalists -- amateur, professional, and retired are invited to audition and learn more about the opportunities available to sing in the Verismo Opera Chorus.  Male singers, representing all vocal ranges and ages, are especially needed.  Choristers will perform in the double bill of Giacomo Puccini’s Suor Angelica and Pietro Mascagani’s Cavalleria Rusticana at the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey on Sunday, October 20 at 3:00 p.m.

“Whether a young artist or a seasoned or retired professional, singing in the Verismo Opera chorus allows singers an exciting opportunity to share their talent with others.  Many of the great singers such as Sutherland and Caruso started their careers in an opera chorus, including myself.  Chorus singing gives the vocalist a chance to be on a professional stage, helps get rid of nerves, plus work with some of the top pros.  A great chorus is the life blood of every opera,” said Amara.

Under Chorus Director Mara Waldman, singers will explore grand opera through active performances.  The operas will be fully staged and performed in costume accompanied by an orchestra under internationally renowned Principal Conductor/Music Director Anthony Morss.

“Singing in the Verismo Opera Chorus provides the unforgettable experience of being on stage in professional level productions, while performing some of the world's greatest and best-loved music of all time.   Singers benefit by developing new language skills, improving musicianship and receiving voice training.  New friends and colleagues are made in an artistic environment usually reserved for only the best musicians and singers,” said Waldman.

Applicants should bring one or two songs to perform.  An accompanist will be provided.  Sight-reading ability is definitely a plus, but not necessary.  No prior stage experience is required.  Download an application or send a request to rohmet@nj.rr.com.  Call (201) 886-0561 to schedule an appointment.

The 2013 season is made possible, in part, with funds provided by the New Jersey Council on the Arts/Department of State, through grand funds administered by the Bergen County Department of Parks, Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs.
