Local Violinist Wins Young Artist Competition

The Society of Musical Arts (SOMA) is pleased to announce that the 2013 Young Artist competition winner is Kriscendra Jones, of Belleville, NJ.  Ms. Jones will play the violin solo in Danse Macabre in SOMA’s October 20th concert “Invitation to Dance,” to be held at St. George’s Episcopal Church at 550 Ridgewood Road in Maplewood.

Ms. Jones currently studies violin under Brennan Sweet of the NJSO, as well as attending Kean University's Conservatory of Music as a music education major with an emphasis in violin and minor in piano.  She has been featured violinist with the Newark Young Writers Arts Festival at NJPAC and NJSO's Greater Newark Youth Orchestra, and currently plays with the Summit Symphony Orchestra in Summit, NJ.

Ms. Jones has been playing the violin for about ten years. She credits her grandmother as the one who originally interested her in the arts, who always encouraged her to become a better person and to never forget why she decided to play the violin in the first place.

Kriscendra's advice to other young musicians would be that "we are our best and worst critic, as a musician, artist, athlete or anything else we have both of those critics whispering in our ears and it's up to us to figure out which voice we decide to listen to. It can be very difficult at times, but remember with every mistake comes a lesson and we can bring ourselves down or bring ourselves up to become better people."

As well as Ms. Jones’ solo piece, the concert features a world premiere work:  "Montuno," by Puerto Rican composer Roberto Sierra.  Sierra and Stephen Culbertson (conductor) will discuss the work after the concert.

The concert featuring Ms. Jones is open to the public and is free for everyone:  “Invitation to Dance” at St. George’s Episcopal Church, 550 Ridgewood Road, Maplewood, 4 pm, Sunday, October 20, 2013.  The “Invitation to Dance” theme will feature a variety of orchestral works called “dance” by their composers.   For more information, visit www.soma.ar88.net, email soma@ar88.net or call 973 763 4939. This concert is made possible in part by funds from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
