VA Seeking Dedicated Volunteers

Lyons, NJ – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) New Jersey Health Care System is creating a Simulation/Experiential-Based Education Center, located at the East Orange Campus, which will include a contemporary, flexible, full-scale inpatient and outpatient room that will incorporate features of Evidence-based Design, patient-centered care principles, and will provide learning spaces to implement experiential and simulation-based learning. The design of the simulation lab/experiential center consists of five key rooms: one standard inpatient room, one standard outpatient room, one meeting space for debriefing and observation of ongoing activities, one classroom to accommodate groups of up to 30 students, and a control room from which simulation/experiential activities can be run and observed directly through two-way mirrors and digital audio/video recording devices.

The Simulation/Experiential Based Education Center along with the involvement of Simulated Patient Volunteers will provide an environment for VA staff to master skills and enhance communication with Veterans.

The Voluntary Service Department is actively recruiting Standardized Patient Volunteers that will implement case scenarios that are scripted to give specific responses and behaviors. The trained Standardized Patient Volunteer will participate in role-playing situations acting out the character of a patient or caregiver experiencing various medical diagnoses. Standardized Patient Volunteer assignments are currently available at the East Orange Campus.
