Nutley Residents Invited to Help Veterans Post

Residents are asked to attend Saturday night's "Save Nutley American Legion Post No. 70" benefit at the post on Franklin Avenue to assist the veterans group with a financial shortfall.

Nutley residents are asked to give back to those who served their country in the military by supporting Saturday night’s “Save Nutley's American Legion Post No. 70” benefit.

The idea comes from Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers, who formed the "Foundation for American Leadership" sponsoring the "Save the Post Fundraiser" at 6:30 p.m. tonight, Saturday, Sept. 22 at the Post on 45 Franklin Ave.

He said the post is having financial trouble and the foundation’s purpose is help veterans improve the situation.

“I’m encouraged by the response so far,” he said. “Saturday night is an important step in this effort.”

Rogers is a retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy and a retired captain with the Nutley Police Department.

Post No. 70 nevertheless has been there for veterans since 1919,  Rogers said, and welcomed returning World War I veterans, and formed a local drum and bugle corps, while donating nearly $30,000 to help unemployed residents during the Great Depression, along with many other contributions.

Tickets for the benefit are $45 per person, and food and entertainment are planned. Tickets can be purchased at the door or can be secured by calling 973-562-6508. Checks should be written to American Legion Post 70.
