Photographer Catches Space Shuttle Over NJ

Mike Black, a Wall Township photographer, captures images of the space shuttle as it passes over New Jersey

As the Space Shuttle Enterprise flew over parts of New Jersey and New York City last Friday, piggybacking atop a modified jumbo jet before landing at its temporary home, Kennedy Airport, Wall photographer Mike Black was able to snap these photos of the historic event.

The prototype shuttle Enterprise, flying atop a specially modified 747 jet, was on its way to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan. As Patch reported afterward, Mayor Raymond McCarthy witnessed the event and made note of it in his speech at the Bicentennial tree planting Friday night in the Town Green.

The tree that was planted that night was an Eastern White Pine, grown from a seed that traveled aboard the 1997 Space Shuttle Columbia. McCarthy said it seemed serendipitous for the shuttle to arrive in New York on the same day the “space shuttle tree” was planted in Bloomfield.
