Schools Open, 9/11 Observance Coming and Local Blaze Top Weekly News

Families in Belleville and Nutley share their first days of school experiences, both towns schedules 911 anniversary observances, and Belleville firefighters quickly contain a house blaze.

Belleville, Nutley Students Head Back to School

Nutley and Belleville students began the 2012-13 school year on Thursday with excitement. School officials in both towns said the first day went smoothly, with several new principals beginning assignments in Nutley. Belleville children returned to schools that had fresh paint, repaired ceilings and improved electrical systems. 

Nutley and Belleville Will Observe 9/11 Anniversary

The communities of Belleville and Nutley scheduled remembrance ceremonies to honor those who died in the 9/11 attacks. Both events will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 11. Joining township officials will be clergy, friends and families of those who died. In addition, local churches are holding special observances. Belleville will have a remembrance at 9 a.m. at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Chestnut Street, officials said Friday.

Accidental House Fire Contained in Belleville

Belleville firefighters quickly extinguished a late-night fire that broke out in a one-family, Colonial-style, wood-framed home on DeWitt Avenue Monday night. The cause of the fire, which started in the second-floor front bedroom, was deemed accidental.

Nutley Officials Busy Despite 'Dog Days'

While Nutley residents have enjoyed vacationing this summer, Nutley officials have been hard at work. At its Aug. 21 meeting, Nutley commissioners approved funding assistance for a special needs group, exempted artists from paying fees to attend an upcoming event, and OK’d an application to repair sidewalks and repave streets.
