Awareness Is Not Enough When it Comes to Helping Families of Children with Autism

The focus on Autism Awareness ended yesterday, as Autism Awareness Month came to a close. For the other 11 months of the year, we need to remember the facts:  New Jersey has the highest rate of autism in the nation, with one in 45 children diagnosed with the condition.

The full impact of autism is exponentially greater when we consider the families of those who are diagnosed. Mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, who love someone with autism, know that even the simple things that most families enjoy together can be a struggle.

As the director of The Phoenix Center, a private school in Nutley serving students with autism for more than 20 years, I have heard from thousands of families caring for a loved one with autism who need to feel welcomed to shop, dine, learn, play and worship in their own communities.

I am heartened to see a growing number of businesses offering "autism-friendly" options and support, but more must be done to help these families. Respite care and after-school programs are needed, especially for working parents.

Let’s move beyond autism awareness to do more to support these amazing families.
