Belleville: Woman Faces DWI Charge After Falling Asleep at Drive-Thru, Police Say

Kearny resident later released

A woman was arrested on DWI charges Jan. 26 after she fell asleep at the drive-thru of a Washington Avenue fast food restaurant, Belleville police said.

Police reportedly found Evelyn Lazo, 35, of Kearny, asleep behind the wheel of her car at Taco Bell around 1:37 am. Officers, who managed to wake her after several attempts, smelled alcohol in a cup Lazo had been holding.

She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, consuming an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle, refusing to take a breathalyzer test and for failing to be in possession of her license while driving. Lazo was believed to be a licensed driver but did not have the document with her at the time of the incident, police said.

She was later released.
