A 20-year-old Fairfield man was arrested Dec. 15 on DUI charges following a traffic stop in Lyndhurst near the Nutley border, officials said.
Frank McCarthy’s silver Toyota hatchback sedan was traveling east on Park Avenue at approximately 3:12 p.m. when it was stopped by police.
Police said they reportedly saw papers and other loose items being blown out of the back of the car near Kingsland and Riverside avenues in Lyndhurst, Nutley police Lt. Thomas Strumolo said.
Officers reported McCarthy appeared confused and pulled his car into the underground parking lot of Kings Court Gym in Lyndhurst, before stopping.
Police ordered the driver and his three teen passengers out of the car, Strumolo said. When McCarthy exited the car, police reportedly had to steady him. Officers said they detected the smell of alcohol on McCarthy as well as the smell of marijuana emanating from the passengers and car.
A police search of the car uncovered a glass pipe in the center console.
McCarthy and the three teens were taken to police headquarters and the car was impounded.
The passengers were released, police said, but McCarthy was charged with driving under the influence.
McCarthy was later released to a friend’s custody.
