Junior Police Academy Coming to Essex County in July

Registration is underway for the 10th annual Essex County College Police Academy Junior Police Academy Week at the Cedar Grove facility. The Academy will be held July 14-18.

The program is open to teens ages 13 to 16 as of July 1. Registration information is available by calling 973-877-4350 or contacting Capt. Lori Apicelli at apicellil@essex.edu.

Cost of the program is $110 per child. The Junior Academy will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Participants will learn about the education and other requirements needed for a career in law enforcement. Topics to be covered include the juvenile justice system; fingerprinting and identification; K-9 demonstrations; gang awareness; drug awareness; Internet safety; fire safety; first aid, and crime scene investigations.

A field trip will also be included as will a physical training component.
