More Information on Water Dept. Scammer Report

Nutley police give out more information from last week's warning of man claiming to be from Water Dept.

Nutley police have released more information on their warning about a man claiming to be a Water Department Employee to gain access to people’s homes.

Police said that about noon on Wednesday, an elderly resident told police a Hispanic male in his 30s rang their door bell posing as a water department employee.

The man, who wore a yellow hard hat, reflective vest and an id around his neck that read “water dept,” told the homeowner he needed to check her water, saying that work in the area may have contaminated it.

Once in the home, the male said not to drink the water and left in a hurry. Police said the homeowner later found that two gold bracelets were taken.

Police said the resident only saw one person and it’s not known if other people were involved. Residents are advised not to let anyone in their home without verifying their identity and to call Nutley police at 973-284-4940 if anyone attempts to gain entry into their home.
