Nutley Police Blotter

The following reports cover May 18 through May 25. 

May 18

Police took control of a large Siberian Huskie dog with no dog license in the area of High Street and turned the animal over to the custody of animal control at 7:51 a.m. 

A local convenience and pharmacy store manager told police at 3:56 p.m. that a man shoplifted items. Police are investigating.   

A Franklin Avenue resident reported at 4:18 p.m. that four tires on a car were flattened. Police are investigating. 

A Chestnut Street salon owner reported at 5:03 p.m. that someone stole a cable television card inserted into the salon television cable box. 

May 19 

Police arrested and charged Alex Hildebrand, 18, of Nutley with driving while intoxicated at 2:05 a.m. The arrest came after police responded to a car accident on Passaic Avenue and found Hildebrand in his car on Oakridge Street. He was issued motor vehicle summonses, and a summons for underage consumption of alcohol and later released to the custody of a family member. 

Police responded to a report a large group had gathered and may have fought in the street on Pake Avenue at 10:59 p.m., but no one was there when police arrived. Police are investigating.

A Chadwick Drive woman reported at 11:36 a.m. that her 2006 Jeep wagon was damaged for the third time in a week. She said this time she found a large dent in the back of the wagon. Police are investigating. 

Police stopped a Paterson man from jumping into the Passaic River at 11:39 p.m., and took him to an area hospital for evaluation. 

May 20

Police responded to a Franklin Avenue business manager who told police at 3:17 p.m. that a man reached over the counter and stole a $100 bill out of an opened register. The manager said he went to a safe to break a large bill into lower denominations when the theft occurred. Police are investigating. 

Police said someone reported a dispute on Passaic Avenue at 9:05 p.m. where an irate driver got out of a car and threatened another driver with a baseball bat. Police are investigating, but the driver left before they arrived. 

Police investigating suspicious drug activity near Franklin Avenue and Centre Street ended up arresting Eric Castellano, 24, of Budd Lake at 9:01 p.m. for an outstanding warrant from Jersey City. Castellano was able to post bail in Jersey City and was released.

Nutley Firefighters extinguished a fire at 10:05 p.m. after a Bloomfield Avenue man reported a bag on fire on his front lawn. Police are also investigating harassing doorbell ringing and garbage dumped at the same home. 

May 21

An unnamed 34-year-old Bloomfield driver received summonses at 2:15 a.m. for tailgating, unnecessary use of a horn, driving with an obstructed view, driving with a suspended license, failure to have a driver’s license and a failure to change address. This was after the driver was stopped just over the town line in Clifton and found to be driving while suspended and driving an unregistered vehicle. The car was impounded.

Police provided medical help to an 83-year-old Ridge Road resident at 3:21 a.m. after the resident reported someone had knocked on the door of a residence and frightened them.

May 22 

A Laurel Place woman reported that her 2011 Lexus was missing from her driveway at noon. Police are investigating. 

A Church on Brookline Avenue reported at 11:14 a.m. that copper gutters and leaders valued at more than $2,000 were stolen from the chapel and church. Police are investigating. 

A Chestnut Street woman offering child care services said a California man, whom she believed to be a potential customer, requested that the Nutley woman forward her personal information. He also asked that the Nutley woman to watch his two-year-old child while he visited the New York area.

After the California man tried several times to get the personal information, the Nutley woman contacted Nutley Police at 1:41 p.m., and police are investigating.

Police are investigating a Fitting Place resident’s report that someone hacked into personal e-mail, accessed a bank account and sent an e-mail to all the victims’ contacts requesting money. 

Police arrested and charged Musa Ibrahim-Vann at 9:55 p.m. with possession of marijuana after attempting to serve $250 Nutley warrant at a Centre Street residence. Police said they smelled burnt marijuana and found two plastic bags with marijuana.

Police said the man said he “had a prescription from a street physician.” He was charged and sent to Essex County Jail when he failed to post $1,00 bail.

May 23 

Responding to an anonymous complaint of drug activity, police arrested two adult men and three teens under age 18 for smoking marijuana at the Kingsland Park gazebo at 9:44 p.m.

Police arrested and charged Alberto Ortiz-Rivera, 18 of Paterson, and Mark Malanga, 24 of Nutley with possession of marijuana. The three teens under age 18 were turned over to the custody of their parents with complaints being drafted through the Juvenile Aid Bureau. 

Police gave a summons to the owner of a large dog to muzzle the animal at 12:49 p.m. after the dog’s owner refused to let someone pass on Hillside Avenue. The summons to muzzle the dog came after the owner had been given a summons for having a vicious dog earlier this year. 

A Franklin Avenue business owner reported at 1:57 p.m. that a scrap pile worth more than $500 was stolen from the side of his property. Police are investigating. 

A Myrtle Avenue landlord reported at 4:24 p.m. that a tenant had moved out and he believes that a dining room table was taken. Police are investigating. 

A township woman told police at 6:52 p.m. that her car had been repeatedly damaged, and this time someone had poured soda all over the car on Church Street. Police are investigating.

Police arrested and charged Stephany Flores, 21, of Nutley at 11:44 p.m. with driving while intoxicated after her 2009 Toyota sedan crashed on Spring Street.

She was given summonses for careless driving, driving while in use of a cellular phone, and leaving the scene of an accident. She was released on her own recognizance. 

Police said a Hartford Drive resident said at 1:40 p.m. that a newly-purchased patio set had been damaged over the evening hours. 

A Coyeman Avenue resident discovered wires were pulled from under their car, causing more than $500 worth of damage, and told police at 2:40 p.m. that they think the damage was an act of criminal mischief. Police are investigating.

May 24 

A Passaic Avenue resident reported at 1:28 p.m. that a man and a woman were banging on her front door, calling her children’s names. The vehicle was reported to have New York license plates. Police are investigating. 

Police received information from the Lexus Auto Group that the group located a stolen car from Nutley that was reported stolen from Laurel Place. The car was located on Martin Luther King Blvd. in Newark. The car is being impounded.
