Nutley Police: Man Driving Without ID Arrested for Active Warrants

Reportedly Claimed that court documents in his car belonged to brother.

Nutley police say that a Rutherford man was arrested on multiple charges after denying his own identity.

According to a police report, officers pulled over Lafon Brown for speeding on Route 21 south on Sunday, Feb. 10. When officers stopped the car, a 2013 Chevy, the driver reportedly said he didn’t have a license or registration. Officers say there was, however, a "failure to appear" notice addressed to Lafon James from Rutherford Municipal Court on the passenger seat of the vehicle.

The driver reportedly told the officers the notice belonged to his brother. Police said that after being asked for his name and other personal information, he identified himself as Lafon Brown of Rutherford, NJ, which was the same information listed on the court documents.

Upon investigation, police learned that Brown’s driver's license was suspended and he held active warrants out of Hackensack and Rutherford. Officers took Brown into custody and transported him to Headquarters without incident.

He was issued summonses for speeding, driving while suspended, failure to possess a driver’s license, failure to possess a registration card, and was advised of his Nutley court date upon being released.
