Orange Man Arrested in Belleville with Handgun, Heroin, Belleville Police Said

Police reportedly noticed outline of gun in man's sweatshirt pocket.

Cops chased down and arrested an Orange man with a handgun and heroin, according to a Belleville police report.

On Wednesday, Belleville police officers responded to a report of two suspicious men on Heckel Street. At the scene, they reportedly interviewed two men on the street, Darrell Rainey, 20, of Orange and a second man who was not charged. 

During the interview, one of the officers reportedly noticed the outline of a handgun in the pocket of Rainey’s sweatshirt.

While officers frisked him to check for a weapon, Rainey allegedly ran off before being apprehended several yards away.

Police said that in addition to a .32 caliber gun, Rainey also had 20 folds of heroin.

Police said the gun’s serial number had been scratched off and that Rainey was a convicted felon and therefore legally barred from owning a gun. 

Rainey was charged with possession of a gun, eluding, possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school and obstruction.
