2013 Fall Leaf Collection and Leaf Bag Distribution Begins Sunday

With leaves changing colors and falling to the ground, Nutley Commissioner Joseph P. Scarpelli and the Department of Public Works announced the schedule for 2013 leaf collection.

Town law states leaves are to be placed in brown, bio-degradable bags and placed curbside between Oct. 15 and Dec. 15 where they will be picked up by the Department of Public Works. The department emphasizes that only leaves bagged in the brown, bio-degradable bags will be collected.

The Public Works Department holds a special leaf bag distribution day on Saturday, Oct. 12 at the Public Works Garage from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The leaf bag give away will be combined with a food drive for the Red Cross food pantry.

“Once again, I am asking residents to help stock the Red Cross food pantry. Canned goods, cereal, peanut butter, pasta, and rice are all needed. Residents can pick up their free leaf bags and at the same time help out those who are less fortunate,” said Dr. Scarpelli.

In addition, if residents are unable to participate in the Oct. 12 distribution day, the department will once again provide 10 bio-degradable leaf bags at no-charge to residents at the Public Works Garage located on Cortland Street, weekdays starting Tuesday, Oct. 15 between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

In addition, the RAKES program will enter its sixth year this fall providing assistance to the elderly and the disabled. “The RAKES program will be utilizing volunteers to help out those who are unable to rake their yards. Details and applications will be forthcoming,” concluded Scarpelli.
