Newark Holding Memorial Day Weekend Events

Corner to be named in honor of local soldier killed in action

The following Memorial Day weekend events will be held in the City of Newark:

On Thursday, May 24, the City of Newark will partner with the G.I. Go Fund to host the 3rd Annual “Jeans for Troops” Day, in which municipal employees who donate $5 to the G.I. Go Fund can wear jeans to work. The City’s participation in the event is part of a statewide observance to raise funds for and awareness of the organization, which helps returning veterans make the transition to civilian life, including access to employment, counseling, housing, and medical services. For more information, contact the G.I. Go Fund at (973) 802-1614.

On Saturday, May 26, at 9 am, the City of Newark will hold a ceremony to re-name the intersection at Niagara Street and Darcy Street after Sgt. Jorge M. Oliveira, a Newark native and Essex County Sheriff’s Officer who served in the New Jersey National Guard. Sgt. Oliveira was killed in combat in Afghanistan on October 19, 2011.

On Saturday, May 26, at 11 am., the City of Newark will hold a Memorial Day Wreath-Laying at the Memorial Monument at Peter Francisco Park in the City’s East Ward. The park is located at the intersection of Ferry Street and Edison Place.
