Nutley Gets $175K 'Safe Route' Grant

Nutley was awarded a $175,000 grant designed to encourage grade and high school students to walk or bike to school, the state Department of Transportation announced Monday.

The grant was awarded through the Safe Routes to School program, which provides funds for communities to make improvements to bike paths, crosswalks and sidewalks in order to make the trip to school safer for non-motorists. The program is also meant to promote healthy exercise habits early in youth.

Nutley was one of 35 grants awarded for road safety Monday. 

“These grants are among hundreds distributed by this administration every year to help local and county governments advance essential projects without burdening local property taxpayers,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.  “Local Aid grants are funneling $380 million in state and federal funds to support worthy local projects and planning initiatives in the current fiscal year.”
