Belleville High School Student Wins Top Honor in PBS Hispanic Youth Showcase

Najalis Gual won first place in the junior teen vocal category at the 2014 Hispanic Showcase that took place at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center last month.

Najalis Gual took the stage at the 2014 Hispanic Youth Showcase finals as her friends and family looked on in the stands with tears in their eyes.

Gual, a freshman at Belleville High School, placed first in the nationally-acclaimed competition's junior teen vocal category for ages 13 to 15 before an audience at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center May 23.

Gual won over the judges with her lovely vocals coupled with her graceful piano skills and took home a $200 scholarship, a trophy and a chance to perform at Six Flags Great Adventure.

The exposure she received on the show could also lead to her being invited to perform on television as has occurred following previous competitions.

“Najalis is the closest friend I have and to see her perform so beautifully and gracefully just brought me to tears. She is very talented and I hope she goes far in regards to her singing career," said friend Natasha Ross.

The showcase is the longest-running Latino talent show on PBS, and winners have gone on to perform in venues like Radio City Music Hall and Madison Square Garden as well as take part in Broadway musicals and win Grammys.

Winners have also achieved notoriety on the national level, appearing on "Dancing With the Stars," "Sabado Gigante" and "American Idol."

Gual currently has her name on the marquee in front of Belleville High, and will appear on the school's public television station to sing and play piano.

“I was surprised to hear my name being announced as the first place winner of a very difficult category. I hope to continue pursuing opportunities to advance my performing career," she said.
