Although last weekend's Nor'easter postponed several school-related events last week, the fourth annual Cheer For the Cure featuring 14 Essex County high school cheerleading squads went on as scheduled last Tuesday at Bloomfield High School.
Bloomfield cheerleading coach Bill Huebner and athletic director Steve Jenkins organized Cheer For the Cure, which over the previous three years raised nearly $16,000 for breast cancer research. Although the amount raised at this year's event would not be officially counted until early this week according to Huebner, proceeds will benefit Coaches vs. Cancer.
"Every year we've had more teams that have stepped forward," Huebner said. "It's one of the more smoothly run competitions."
Coaches from Caldwell College, Rutgers University, Seton Hall University and William Paterson University judged the three categories of competition -- beginner, intermediate and advanced -- based upon criteria pre-established by Huebner and his coaching colleagues.
Montclair Kimberley Academy won the beginner group, while Belleville (intermediate) and Nutley (advanced) won their respective categories.
Also competing at Cheer For the Cure were teams from Barringer, Bloomfield, Cedar Grove, East Orange Campus, Glen Ridge, Montclair, Newark Tech, Verona, Weequahic, West Essex and West Orange.
