Essex County College Offering Courses in Allied Health

Payment plans available for some courses

A series of allied health courses will be offered starting in February at the Newark campus of Essex County College. Call 973-877-3079 for registration and other information on any of these allied health programs.

     Pharmacy Technician is a 17-session certificate program designed to prepare students for employment as a technician working under the direction of a registered pharmacist in a hospital or community pharmacy setting. The class will meet Mondays, starting Feb. 11, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. The June 17 class only will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be prepared to take the national certificate examination. The cost of the program is $770.

     CPR Renewal for Healthcare Providers is a four-hour session approved by the American Heart Association which satisfies skills upgrade requirements for healthcare providers and professional rescuers seeking recertification. Upon successful completion of the class, a new AHA certification cared will be issued. The class will be held Feb. 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The class will be repeated Saturday, March 16 at the same time. Cost of the class is $45.

     Advanced Medical CPT & ICD-9/Coding is a 16-session course for people looking to enhance their career as a medical biller and coder. Upon successful completion of this course, students may be eligible to take the American Academy of Professional Coders National Examination. The class will meet Saturdays, Feb. 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Total cost of the program is $880, with a payment plan available.    

     Medical Insurance Billing Specialist is a 20 session course that will give students career opportunities in the constantly growing health care field. The curriculum provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of billing and collection processes. The class will meet Saturdays, starting Feb. 23 and running through June 23 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. The class will continue for four consecutive Wednesdays, starting July 3 from 5 to 9:35 p.m. Total cost is $1,265 and a payment plan is available.

     CPR for Healthcare Providers is a course that will prepare students with the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide effective life support in an emergency. Participants will learn to use an AED (automated external defibrillator) for victims in sudden cardiac arrest. Students will earn an American Heart Association certificate for successful completion of the one session class, set for Feb. 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost of the session is $91.
