POLL: Is the Penn State Scandal Over?

Former FBI Director's report shows systematic cover up of sexual abuse against boys, but are we getting the whole story?

Penn State has been in the news this week - and not in a good way.

After the Freeh Report was released on Thursday, former FBI Director Louis Freeh announced that there had been a systematic cover up of sexual abuse against boys in the late 1990s by former assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.

The report was damning of former Hall of Fame Coach Joe Paterno and the college is still reeling from the effects of the scandal. Employees, some of whom reported the abuse, said the integrity of the football program was protected over the safety of the boys. The college is facing civil suits and possible sanctions of its athletic program by the NCAA.

Sandusky was convicted on 45 criminal counts in a trial and eight young men testified against him. Though the 68-year-old former coach will spend time in prison, the one person nobody will have a chance to talk to is Paterno - who died of cancer earlier this year.

Though Paterno has been revered for his work with the Penn State football program, there has even been talk of taking down his campus statue. Are the allegations against him fair? He's not able to defend himself? Is it possible the public will never know what really happened at Penn State?

This entire affair is a terrific example of the tail wagging the dog. Penn State forgot they are a university, not an NFL farm team.

They never forgot that at all. It's a tragic case of following the money. Penn State sold its soul to protect the golden goose that generates millions of dollars every year. Slowly but surely, the myth of purity in athletics is becoming a smoke dream. What disturbs me is the idea that many believe only Penn State is controlled by its money-making football program. All Division I schools have been put on notice.
