Seven Belleville High Students Become Published Poets

Seven Bellevile High School juniors and seniors had their work published in 'A Celebration of Poets' after entering the contest as part of a class assignment.

A simple assignment turned into a major accolade for some juniors and seniors at Belleville High School.

Seven students who are a part of Karen McLean's creative writing class at Belleville High School received the honor of having their work published in "A Celebration of Poets" after the students submitted their work as part of a weekly assignment.

McLean has been teaching the class, which is only open to juniors and seniors, for eight years and this is the first in which she made it mandatory that students submit their poetry to different contests each week.

The three juniors who won the contest were  Justin Vallejo, Scarlet Kong, and Amanda Rodriguez. The four seniors were Liz Rodriguez, Celinette Toribio, David Walicky and Brianna Rodriguez.

Kong, Vallejo, Toribio and Liz Rodriguez won competitions twice this year.

"I am very proud of my students for following through all of the steps required for entering these contests. They are very talented students who deserve this recognition," McLean said.

Students in the creative writing class in conjunction with the Creative Writing Club also publish the annual campus literary magazine "Aberrations."
