Jackals Face Elimination After Sunday Loss

Team down 3-1 in Can-Am League championship series after Sunday 1-0 loss.

The New Jersey Jackals are in danger of seeing their Can-Am League Championship series end tonight, Monday, at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls following a 1-0 loss to the Quebec City Capitales.

The Jackals now trail the best-of-seven series 3-1.

Righthander Kyle Greenwalt pitched 6⅔ innings of five-hit baseball before being relieved by lefthander Jeff Gogal. Gogal was charged with the loss for the Jackals.

Capitales designated hitter Rene Leveret started the eighth-inning rally for Quebec City with a two out walk. Catcher Josue Peley followed with a single on a 2-1 count that moved Leveret to third base.

First baseman Ivan Naccarata then followed with an RBI single to score Leveret, giving the Capitales all the run support they needed.

Third baseman Nick Giarraputo led off the bottom of the ninth inning for the Jackals with a line single before being replaced by pinch runner Gaetano Giunta. After Giunta advanced to second base on the next pitch, Matt Cusick, Carlos Guzman and Matt Nandin made three consecutive outs to end the game.

The Jackals began the series in strong fashion Wednesday night in Quebec City as Isaac Pavlik pitched six innings allowing one unearned run and the Jackals topped the Capitales 6-2.

In Game 2 Thursday at Le Stade Municipal Stadium, the Jackals bats went silent and Quebec City tied the series at a game apiece with a 3-0 win.

Jackals righthander Mike Ness pitched six innings, allowing all three runs on eight hits and four strikeouts as the Jackals fell behind in the fourth inning.

Jackal batters struck out seven times and only managed two hits in the loss.

When the series returned to Yogi Berra Stadium Friday night, Jackal’s centerfielder Chris Curran's double in the bottom of the eighth tied the score at three. However, in their next at bat, the Capitales launched a two-out rally in the top of the ninth inning on their way to a 5-3 win.

Saturday’s championship game between the Jackals and Capitales was rained out and rescheduled for tonight, Monday, at 7:05.
