Nutley Farmers Market Returns Sunday

Farmers market returns Sunday with special guests alongside fresh produce and prepared foods.

The Nutley Farmers Market is set to open its 2013 season on Sunday with new extended hours of 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Every week, the Nutley Farmers Market features live musical entertainment and a variety of regionally-grown produce, as well as cut flowers, homemade cheese, dried fruit and fresh nuts, pickles, bread and more.

This Sunday's opening will feature special guest Produce Pete from WNBC’s “Weekend Today in NY,” who will help kick-off the market’s fourth season with a meet and greet appearance from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Greenutley Committee has planned free special events to be held in conjunction with the Farmers Market as the summer goes on.  On July 21, there will be Hanger Recycling Day.  In August, there will be the Biggest Tomato and Zucchini Contest and Ink Cartridge recycling. There will be a “mini” Eco-fest and Food Fest in September and in October, a Halloween Costume Swap and Rigid Plastic Recycling Day.  For a complete list of dates and event details, please visit the Township’s website, www.nutleynj.org.

“Clean out your closets and bring metal, wood, and plastic hangers to the market so they can be recycled,” said Scarpelli.  “We know there are many Nutleyites that are proud of their gardens, so on Aug. 11, let’s see who can grow the biggest tomato and zucchini.”

The market will take place on Sundays, rain or shine, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Municipal Parking Lot No. 1 on William Street.  The Nutley Farmers Market program will continue on Sundays through Oct. 27.

“Our goal is to keep growing and become one of the best markets in North Jersey, with some of the finest vendors in the state,” said Commissioner Joseph Scarpelli.  “This year we have added some new vendors and planned events to coincide with the market to highlight our green initiatives.”
