“Everyone is proud of their backyard gardens,” said Commissioner Scarpelli.  “What better way to recognize our local gardeners than seeing who has the biggest tomato and zucchini.”

The Greenutley Committee has sponsored events throughout the year such as Compost Day and rain barrel demonstrations that not only educate residents on different ways to reduce waste and conserve resources, but also offer natural alternatives to aid the local gardeners.  Compost increases water-holding capacity, improves soil structure, reduces compaction, allows for better root penetration, increases heat absorption and reduces erosion in the garden.

“We have made rain barrels and compost bins available to our residents at our cost, which is much cheaper than retail,” said Scarpelli.  “Mixing compost to the soil and watering with rain water are two of the best methods to green your garden.”

The contest will be registering locally grown tomatoes and zucchinis from 9 am until the contest weigh-in at 12 noon.
