Heat Brings More Cooling Actions
Both towns officials urge precautions, while Belleville and Nutley officials open cooling centers today, at Belleville Senior Citizen Building and Nutley Public Affairs building until,10 p.m. in Belleville and 4 p.m. in Nutley.
Belleville and Nutley have opened cooling stations and Nutley officials issued a more detailed series of tips to stay safe during the heatwave that is expected to continue through Saturday.
In Belleville, the Senior Citizens Building at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Mill Street is being used as a cooling station until 10 p.m. tonight and tomorrow from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., according to health department officials, who said a few people were already there by 6 p.m. Wednesday. The building opened at 4 p.m Wednesday.
In Nutley, the Public Affairs Department building at 149 Chestnut St. is open until 4 p.m. today. For information, call 973-284-4976.

Belleville Fire Chief Robert Caruso said officials advise residents in distress to call police at 973-450-3333 or fire officials at 973-450-3374 if they have a problem.
He said officials were ready for the emergency measure of opening a cooling station.

In Nutley, a heat advisory is posted on the township website urging residents with no air conditioning to go to public places, libraries, malls, movie theaters or other buildings, to wear loose, light-colored clothing, drink lots of fluids and check on children and the elderly.
A more advanced series of tips was issued this afternoon. It urges people to take steps to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Officials warn that when the weather turns extremely hot and humid, it’s vital to drink plenty of fluids, spend time in cool places and reduce or reschedule any physical activity. Officials said to remember to check on elderly family members and neighbors to make sure they are safe.

Meredith Blank of the Department of Public Affairs put up the first advisory and the Department is also using the reverse 911 system to send texts or emails to all who are signed up with the same advisory.
There are no public pools in Belleville and Nutley, but Nutley does have the Diamond Spring Beach Club on Evergreen Avenue.
