Ready, Set, Go: A Guide to Spring Runs

A round-up of runs, walks and races happening around Essex.


Runners, joggers, walkers— spring is here and the warm weather is calling you to break out your running shoes. Below is a round-up of runs, walks and races happening in Essex County throughout the season.

• Caldwell College 5K for Autism

Date/Time: April 21, 8:30 a.m. 

Entry Fees: $25 for adults, $7 for children under 10 before April 1, $30 adults, $10 children under 10 ($18 for USATF members) after April 1

Location: Caldwell College, 120 Bloomfield Ave., Caldwell

Race Details: 3.1 Mile/5K, 1 Mile Fun Run/Walk, kids welcome. This race will help raise funds for Caldwell College's on-campus Center for Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis, as well as help raise public awareness of autism.

Parking: There will be ample amounts of free parking on the Caldwell College Campus.


• Running 4 Answers, a race against Alzheimer's

Date/Time: Saturday, April 28, 8:30 a.m.

Entry Fee: $30/$25/$22 ($28 USATF members)

Location: Roseland Municipal Building, 19 Harrison Ave., Roseland

Race Details: 4-mile race and 2-mile fun run/fitness walk, all proceeds will benefit Cure Alzheimer's Fund (www.curealzfund.org).

Parking: Free parking available at the Municipal Building, Roseland Library and the Calvary Evangelical Free Church on Fells Road. 


• Horizon High School's Second Annual Expand Your Horizons 5K 

Date/Time: Saturday, April 28, Registration: 8:30 a.m.; 1 Mile: 9:50 a.m.; 5K 10 a.m.; Awards: 11:30 a.m.

Entry Fee: Adult 5K Run/Walk: $25; USATF members: $23; Under 15 5K Run/Walk: $12; 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk: $10

Location: Brookdale Park, Bloomfield

• Berkeley Elementary School 1st Annual 5K Run/Fitness Walk

Date/Time: Sunday, April 29, 8 a.m.

Entry Fee: Before April 1 $15, after April 1 $20, Race day $25, Kids under 15 free

Location: 351 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield

Race Details: Run/Fitness Walk starts and ends at Berkeley Elementary School. The 5K route is a flat, fast and rolling course along Bloomfield Avenue and Watsessing Park. Police traffic controlled. EMS on site. This event is sanctioned by the NJ-USA Track & Field (USATF).


• 2012 Susan G. Komen North Jersey Race for the Cure

Date/Time: Sunday, May 6, 7 a.m. registration, 8:30 a.m. run, 10 a.m. walk

Entry Fee: $35 Runners: Timed 5K, $30 Walkers: 5K/1-Mile Fun Walk, $20 Teens for the Cure (ages 11-17), $15 Kids for the Cure (ages 10 & under), $100 Doctors for the Cure

Location: Essex County South Mountain Recreation Complex, West Orange

Race Details: Make an impact and be part of this year’s race, raising money to help end breast cancer.


• IHN Race Against Homelessness

Date/Time: Saturday, May 12, 9 a.m. registration, 10 a.m. race

Entry Fee:  $20 – Adults, $15 - Youth 18 and under

Location: Brookdale Park, Bloomfield

Race Details: Post-race celebration includes refreshments, music by Parents Who Rock, and awards in all age categories. Pick up your race packet on May 10 and 11 at IHN, 46 Park St., Montclair or on race day at Brookdale Park from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.


• WEFE 5K "Trotting For Technology"

Date/Time: Saturday, May 19, 9 a.m.

Entry Fee: $25

Location: , 65 West Greenbrook Road, North Caldwell

Race Details: The West Essex Foundation for Education will host its annual 5K "Trotting For Technology." Runners and walkers of all ages are welcome.


Coming up soon:

The 30th Annual Montclair Run For The Kids sponsored by the YMCA and the Montclair Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department will be held on Sunday, June 3. The event includes a 10K run and a 2 mile walk/run "fun run."
