A handful of residents questioned the small increase in property taxes at a township council meeting Tuesday night.
The Belleville Township Council unanimously passed the final 2012 $56.5 million Municipal Budget Tuesday night, after hearing from a few residents questioning the estimated $100 tax increase for a home assessed at the township average of $245,000. Frequent critic and former mayor Vincent Frantantoni grilled officials about whether the budget meets the 2 percent cap on spending increases mandated by the state. A woman senior citizen said she was glad the increase was not three times larger, but asked that her name not be used. Others, like Vic Maffuci, listened to officials, but did not comment. The spending plan is called "very preliminary" by township officials, with more spending cuts coming to reduce the tax burden for Belleville property owners.
The Belleville Township Council recently began working on its municipal budget. Township officials say it's time to decide what to cut and what to keep, and how to relieve overburdened taxpayers. The seven township council members all voted to introduce the 2012 town budget at the May 22 public meeting. Officials said $1.2 million is already trimmed from the preliminary $56.4 million budget, and some council members have said more will be cut. They say they want to keep essential services, including police and fire personnel and equipment, but also don't want to overburden taxpayers with a large increase in municipal taxes. New mayor sworn in on Tuesday.
Nutley’s governing body did double duty on Tuesday. At Noon, the newly-elected board of commissioners reorganized, then later that night, the board held its first official meeting. One of its first acts of business was to pass the 2012 municipal budget. Earlier in the day, Alphonse Petracco was sworn in as Nutley’s new mayor at noon. The mayor was the top vote- Petracco in last week’s municipal elections. He won the mayor’s spot, by beating out Joseph Scarpelli by just 13 votes. The new mayor said all of the commissioners would work together, “for the good of Nutley.” Petracco will continue to oversee the Department of Public Safety for another four years.
