Belleville Library Invites Residents to Tea, 'Taste' in April

The Belleville Public Library invites residents to two of its major events during April, a traditional English Tea and A Taste of Belleville, which features great food from the area.

With spring's arrival comes to major events at the Belleville Public Library and Information Center - a traditional English Tea and a "Taste" of the best food in Belleville and Nutley. The annual Friends of the Belleville Public Library English Tea, presented by Friends President Margery Lordi, comes Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m.  "This is always very popular," said Joan Taub, library director. "Tickets are $15, and are on sale now at the library’s circulation desk. " Taub said the library becomes something out of a storybook as visitors participate in a formal English tea, which includes white gloves, hats, pastries, and desserts donated by local restaurants. Tickets are limited to a total of 60 attendees, and sell out quickly, so Taub said…

The Week Ahead in Nutley and Belleville

'Glengarry Glen Ross' premieres and activities at the libraries

Here’s a sample of what’s going on in Nutley and Belleville in the coming week: The Nutley Little Theater’s production of the David Mamet classic “Glengarry Glen Ross” opens this week. Showtimes are 8 pm Feb. 8,9, 15,16,21,22 and 23 and 2 pm Feb. 10,17 and 23. Click here for tickets or more information. The Knitting Club meets Feb. 5 from 7 to 8 pm at the Nutley Public Library, 93 Booth Drive. Meanwhile, at the Belleville Public Library, “Get Your Game On” will be held Friday from 3 to 5 pm. Music Together Program Coming to Belleville Libary

Classes begin in April

Registration is now under way for the Music Together program at the Belleville Public Library, 221 Washington Ave. The program is an instructional and play program open to babies and toddlers and their caregivers. Music Together is sponsored by the Essex County Local Arts Program. Those interested can sign up for one of two sessions, at 9:45 am and 10:45 am. The classes will be held Thursdays from April 11 to June 12. For more information call 973-450-3434.

Belleville Library Hosts Three Kings Celebration

Library treats children to a magician and snacks in celebration of annual holiday event

The Belleville Public Library hosted an audience of more than 100 for Three Kings Day celebration on Monday afternoon. The day featured magic and snacks, and was a joint project with the Township Council and Board of Education helping out the library, according to Richard Yanuzzi, a library board member. Local magician Joe Fischer shows a Belleville Public Library audience of more than 100 children his sleight of hand, inviting several youngsters to help him perform his tricks. As the show was about to start, six-year-olds Dominic Miranda and Sophia Polez of School No. 7 said they were excited to see the magic show and to learn about Three Kings Day. Had it been some islamic story telling, the Christians would have been in an uproar citing the same constitutional mandate. This really is absurd. Belleville Library Welcomes Bronze Lions

Three-hundred pound figures to grace the entrance to main branch

Library officials, students and residents welcomed two bronze lions to the Belleville Public Library on Nov. 29. After being postpooned by both Hurricane Sandy and a nor'easter earlier, the library helped commemorate its 100th anniversary with two bronze lions parading up Washington Avenue to take their place in front of the library, according to Joan Taub, library director. They are there for children to play on, and people to take photos with, Taub said. The two lions cost almost $10,000, and were paid for by fundraisers from the Friend of the Belleville Library, she said. Town Pensions, Firefighter Contract Top This Week's Local News

Did you miss the headlines in Belleville and Nutley this week? Don't worry, there is a recap below of some of the biggest news of the week.

The Belleville mayor and council suspended pension payments to three township attorneys after a state report came out that said they were improperly enrolled in the state pension system. The Township Attorney, Assistant Township Attorney and Prosecutor were among nearly 200 New Jersey professionals who continued to collect pension credits, despite state laws designed to remove those professionals from the state’s pension system, town officials said. Belleville firefighters will vote on a new contract on Sept. 11th that has already gotten the endorsement of the township council The four-year contract was approved by the council in August and according to township officials it will give firefighters a 2 percent increase retroactively in 2012…

Belleville Library Collecting Cell Phones For Soldiers

Library officials invite residents to donate their gently-used cell phones to be traded for pre-paid minutes for soldiers to stay connected through a non-profit organization.

Belleville library officials are partnering with a group that helps overseas troops call home. The Belleville Public Library and Information Center and the non-profit group Cell Phones for Soldiers Inc. are asking Belleville residents to help troops call home by donating gently-used cell phones. The cell phone group officials say that with ongoing deployments to combat areas and elsewhere, as many as 369,000 troops are serving in the U.S. military overseas. By donating to the groups, Belleville residents can provide troops with that precious connection to loved ones back home by adding pre-paid minutes to the phones, the group  said.
