Outer Beauty Tips Lead to Inner Strength for Women with Breast Cancer

Resources for women fighting breast cancer that your doctor doesn't offer.

For a woman with cancer, having a bald head, pale skin or a missing breast can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." But now more than ever, there are resources for women that will put the spotlight back on their work, their accomplishments and their life—and change that banner to simply read, "Woman." Locally, women with cancer can get complimentary beauty sessions through the Look Good Feel Better program, a non-medical, brand-neutral public service program that teaches beauty techniques to cancer patients to help them manage the appearance-related side effects of cancer …

Fight Breast Cancer With Your Fork

The foods on your plate can help protect against breast cancer and prevent other diseases as well.

This year, an estimated 226,870 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Of those, close to 40,000 will die of the disease. According to the American Cancer Society, there is no sure way to prevent breast cancer, but there are things you can do to reduce your risk of the disease. Breast Cancer in Young Women: Resources and Statistics

Breast cancer isn't age specific. Here's how to cope with treatments and augmentations if you are diagnosed earlier in life.

Generally speaking, a woman in New Jersey has a one in 77 chance of getting breast cancer, according to this breast cancer statistics chart from komen.org. An American woman in her 30s has a one in 232 chance of getting the disease, and a woman 20 years her senior has a one in 42 probability, according to the website. “Although we aren’t certain, the cause of breast cancer in younger women is likely caused by a genetic predisposition,” says Ann H. Partridge, M.D., M.P.H., the medical oncologist director of the Adult Survivorship Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women’s Hospital. While breast cancer treatment in young women is often effective, the chance of recovery tends to be worse in women under 40. Breast tissue …

Pink Out a Rousing Success

More than $6,000 raised as Belleville rallies around Lindsay Giordano

For the second time in about 48 hours, hundreds of friends and supporters gathered to back her in her ongoing battle against breast cancer. “It shows everyone is behind me,” said Giordano, a 2000 BHS graduate, with a smile. “It means the world to me.” After nearly 750 folks packed into The Brownstone in Paterson for a Wednesday night fundraiser, 800 arrived at her alma mater Friday evening for a Pink Out that not only paid tribute to the 29-year-old who underwent a double mastectomy and is currently undergoing chemotherapy, but also raised awareness about her affliction — and also accumulated more …
