Man believed to be involved in robberies in Belleville and Bloomfield.
The Essex County Sheriff's Office posted a $5,000 cash reward on Thursday for information leading to the arrest of two men wanted in connection with eleven armed robberies of convenience stores, liquor stores and gas stations in towns in three North Jersey counties since February 1, said Sheriff Armando Fontoura. One of the men has been identified as having robbed and shot the owner of MS&K Confectionery in Maplewood on April 1, said Fontoura. The man was also recently identified as allegedly robbing a Belleville convenience store on April 14 and being part of a two-man armed robbery at a liquor store in Linden on April 17. Man reportedly called officers racial slurs while in custody.
A resident charged with assault reportedly smashed a Nutley police cruiser’s window Saturday. Steven Scharton, 31, of Nutley was charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief after police responded to an injured man on Franklin Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, police said. The victim was spitting up blood, missing a tooth and couldn't recall what happened to him, police said. Witnesses in the area told police that the victim, who was transported to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, had been beaten by two men who fled on foot. Newark man wanted in connection with early morning shooting death of Belleville man.
Law Enforcement officials believe a Newark man was responsible for Saturday morning's fatal shooting of a Belleville man in Bloomfield. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Bloomfield Police Chief Christopher Goul announced today that arrest warrants have been issued for Marcelus Tonic, 25. Tonic is wanted for the murder of 24-year-old Ron E. Jean of Belleville. Jean was fatally shot on April 27 at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Beardsley Avenue in Bloomfield and was pronounced dead at 4:06 a.m. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force tips line at 1-877-847-7432.

Englewood police charged the man in connection with two alleged incidents.
A 41-year-old Nutley man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly punching and strangling his girlfriend in front of her 9-year-old son, Englewood police said. The 29-year-old woman showed up at Englewood police headquarters with a black eye Friday night and told detectives that her boyfriend, Patrick Davis, recently attacked her on two occasions, authorities said. One alleged assault happened in Englewood while the other reportedly occurred in a vehicle at the Miller's Ale House parking lot in Paramus, where they met to talk about the trouble in the relationship. Two men were arrested on multiple charges after a fight outside a Belleville bar that attracted a large and reportedly unruly crowd, authorities said. A fight broke out between two men at the Providence Bar on Heckel Street on Feb. 15 shortly after 1 a.m, according to Belleville police. The scuffle reportedly spilled out into the street, with bar patrons rushing outside to watch. According to police records, Belleville officers, responding to a report of a large, noisy disturbance, arrived as the two men were assaulting each other. When the officers tried to separate the two men, they reportedly turned on the police, pushing the officers and flailing their arms. Following two bank robberies, Belleville police seek to catch the suspect.
Belleville police believe that the same man robbed two township banks and are asking for the public's help in finding him. According to a press release, the man entered the Valley National bank at 11:41 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23. Wearing a red Yankees baseball cap and a blue zip up hoodie, he reportedly handed the teller a note reading "Give me money have gun." The man, described as a 5'8" man in his mid 20s, reportedly left with $3,200. Police believe he also robbed the Valley National bank in November of 2012 and the Sovereign Bank in Newark the previous month. Reportedly Claimed that court documents in his car belonged to brother.
Nutley police say that a Rutherford man was arrested on multiple charges after denying his own identity. According to a police report, officers pulled over Lafon Brown for speeding on Route 21 south on Sunday, Feb. 10. When officers stopped the car, a 2013 Chevy, the driver reportedly said he didn’t have a license or registration. Officers say there was, however, a "failure to appear" notice addressed to Lafon James from Rutherford Municipal Court on the passenger seat of the vehicle. The driver reportedly told the officers the notice belonged to his brother. Police said that after being asked for his name and other personal information, he identified himself as Lafon Brown of Rutherford, NJ, which was the same information listed on the …
