One of the Jersey Shore's most iconic figures will be honored annually with "Clarence Clemons Day" each Jan. 11. Gov. Chris Christie signed a resolution declaring the musician's birthday Clarence Clemons Day, according to a report on Philly.com. State Sen. Jennifer Beck (R-11) proposed the resolution, which was passed by the state Senate in December 2012. The resolution memorializes the legendary saxophonist from Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band. Clemons died last year at the age of 69 after suffering a stroke. “The New Jersey Shore would not be the same without the music of Bruce Spingsteen’s E- Street Band,” Beck previously said. The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey. Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. Wieners has served as head of state's largest police union since 2008
Anthony Wieners, a longtime Belleville police detective, last week was elected to another term as president of the state Police Benevolent Association, Nj.com reported Monday. Wieners, a 32-year veteran of the Belleville force, has been president of the PBA since 2008. His latest term as head of the 33,000-member union is three years. Wieners's presidency coincides with the economic doldrums caused by the 2008 recession, a time when departments across the state, including Belleville’s, have reduced manpower through attrition. Agency oversees Newark treatment plant
Thomas Tucci, a Nutley resident and longtime manager of the Township of Cedar Grove, has been nominated to become one of seven commissioners of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, the office of Gov. Chris Christie announced this week. The commission oversees a wastewater treatment plant in Newark that serves 2 million people in Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson and Union counties. The 111-year-old agency is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. It’s been a consistent refrain from Gov. Chris Christie’s office following Hurricane Sandy’s landing on New Jersey’s shores. Make no mistake about it, he told the assembled crowd of lawmakers at the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey will be back. As expected, much of Christie’s State of the State address focused on Sandy’s impact on New Jersey and the ongoing effort to see those areas most devastated by the storm restored as quickly as possible. Gov. Chris Christie signed legislation into law on Friday requiring parents to notify officials when their child will be absent from school. The law also stipulates that school officials must contact a parent if a student is absent without prior notification to the school. “Community leaders and parents will now be required to take immediate, personal responsibility for the children they must care for and protect,” state Senator Kevin O’Toole, who initiated the new law, said in a press release. “Just a few seconds of accountability can be enough to save lives and solve abductions.” The bill, known as Tabitha’s Law, is named for a Tennessee teenager, Tabitha Tudor, who has been missing since 2003.
