Belleville School Budget Voted Down,Three Win Board Seats

Voters reject the budget's $272 tax increase by 66 votes, while two newcomers and one incumbent board member win uncontested three-year seats.

Only five percent of registered voters came out Tuesday to reject the $63.5 million 2013-14 school budget by nearly 70 votes, while three candidates gained three, three-year Board of Education seats running unopposed. The small percentage of residents voted down the school budget 464 to 377. The budget raises taxes an average of $277 for a home assessed at the township average. John Rivera won a second term, but finished third in votes with 508, while newcomers Raymond Kuebler and Lillian Torres garnered 517 and 540 votes, respectively. The school budget will now go before the Belleville Township Council, and the council will decide on an amount to reduce the spending plan. Four File for Three Belleville School Board Seats

One incumbent running on a ticket with two newcomers, while a third newcomer is running solo for the three, three-year seats to be decided in the April 16 election.

Four candidates filed their petitions by the Feb. 25 deadline to run for the three, three-year Belleville Board of Education seats to be decided in the April 16 elections. John Rivera will seek a second term, running on a ticket with newcomers Raymond Kuebler and Lillian Torres, while fellow newcomer Christine Lamparello will be the fourth candidate.  A fifth resident, Ralph Vellon, took out petitions but said in a statement he does not plan to run. Current board vice-president Patricia Inaugurato and three-term board member Vincent Strumolo, Jr. are not running. Lamparello could not be reached for comment. Interesting that Belleville is one of the few school districs left in New Jersey that did not vote to shift its election to November!!! Is this a strategy?? Cause not many voters show up for BOE elections, however in November all residents are aware to vote! Teachers contracts, interesting point, which never get's addressed at the meetings!!! I guess topics are prioritized based on what they want…   more ›

Three Take Out Petitions for Belleville School Board

One incumbent, two newcomers are the only residents to have taken out petitions needed to run for April 16 Board of Education election, with the deadline approaching on Feb. 25

With the deadline for candidates to file their petitions to run for a Belleville Board of Education seat five days away, three candidates have officially taken out petitions, according to officials. Incumbent John Rivera and residents Raymond Kuebler and Lillian Torres have taken out petitions as of Friday. A fourth resident, Ralph Vellon, took out petitions but said in a statement he does not plan to run. None of the potential candidates could be reached for comment. Any candidate for the April 16 school board election must file his or her petition by Feb. 25, 50 days before the election, officials said. After delivering a PowerPoint presentation detailing the school district's Adequate Yearly Progress in relation to its performance on the NJASK tests, head of curriculum Michael Meyers said at Monday night's Board of Education meeting the district has contracted two consulting firms to help continue improving students' scores. Although the Washington Township (Morris County)-based Standards Solutions is in its third year of working with the township's elementary and high schools, the district is in its first year of using Levels of Teaching Innovations, Inc.
