Sandy, a Police Chase in Nutley, Belleville Superintendent Sued Again

The month's top stories in Nutley and Belleville

Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall along the Jersey Shore Oct. 29, was still very much in the news in the early part of November, as residents in Nutley and Belleville contended with a variety of problems arising in the wake of the hybrid superstorm. Power restoration was a chief concern, as people throughout the communities waited several days to a few weeks for the lights to come back on. Another side-effect of the storm was gas shortages. With power out at several gas stations, those able to remain open were mobbed by both motorists and those seeking fuel for private generators. The shortages prompted state officials to institute even-odd rationing in Essex and several other counties in order to reduce the massive queues at the pumps…

Second Suit Filed Against Belleville Superintendent

Secretary says Picardo made sexist remarks; law firm says a third employee may also sue

A woman who served as secretary to Belleville Superintendent of Schools Joseph Picardo has filed a lawsuit charging Picardo with numerous acts of gender discrimination, including routinely using a four-letter expletive to refer to women and making other “chauvinistic” remarks. This is the second lawsuit in recent months filed against Picardo, who was placed on administrative leave after Michael Meyers, a former district employee, accused Picardo of making unwanted sexual advances. That suit was filed in August in Bergen County.  Donna Cardillo, who has known Picardo since childhood, said he recommended her for the job of confidential secretary in late 2010, according to a statement and a copy of the suit provided by her attorney, the …

The month's top stories in Belleville and Nutley

Joseph Picardo, the superintendent of Belleville’s public schools since 2010, went on paid leave after another administrator sued him for sexual misconduct. Helene Feldman was later named interim superintendent. A road rage incident in Nutley ended with a Pompton Plains man being arrested on assault and drug charges. The man, Sefer Nasufi, also allegedly stabbed the victim in a bank parking lot, police said. Nutley’s most notorious tanorexic, Patricia Krentcil, has teamed up with an author to provide online tips on proper skin care.  In one of the webisodes Krentcil gets a skin peel. School overcrowding was a hot topic of discussion at both school board and township council meetings this month. Some parents blame the problem at least …

Belleville Schools: Bullying Won't be Tolerated Here

Belleville School officials say they take any reports of bullying seriously and urge parents and students to come forward.

It may be summer vacation, but school bullying is still on the minds of some parents. Santos Martinez, a parent in Belleville, told the Board of Education that he has concerns about bullying going on in School No. 4 and is worried about his daughter and her friends. "I think everybody needs to come together," said Martinez, a Belmont Avenue resident. "Everyone remembers a time when either they were bullied or they saw someone being bullied." He said he’s heard about girls from ages 9 to 12 being bullied and had asked the girls on his daughters’ softball teams to write about their experiences with bullies and found their answers troubling. "Every single girl involved said they were either involved in bullying or were bullied themselves," he…

Board supports tenure reform, opposes two other proposals.
