Annual program registration time extended until Jan. 5.
Nutley residents looking to get healthier in 2013 have been given an extension to register for the township’s fourth annual “Wellness Challenge,” according to Nutley Commissioner Steve Rogers. Registration will now close on Saturday, Jan. 5, Rogers said. He said the "holiday temptations" of food with extra calories that challenge wellness participants during the holidays led him to delay the start date. According to officials, this year's program will be significantly different, and details are coming after Jan. 1. It was previously reported that Lauren McCreesh is running the program. Officials said that information was incorrect. During its first three years, the program was known as a weight-loss event. The program was changed from "…

New program invites high school, college students to write letters to soldiers serving now while making phone calls and visits to older World War II, Korean War and Vietnam veterans.
Nutley Commissioner Steven Rogers, a retired Navy Commander, wants to get high school and college students involved with local war veterans. “I want young people to see the World War II generation veterans and learn the history, and I want all veterans in Nutley to know that they are not forgotten,” Rogers said. “Plus younger students can write to soldiers closer to their age and make sure they are being remembered as well.” Veterans are already getting assistance from a military affairs bureau, which offers legal help, employment counseling, financial planning, education benefits and counseling for returning veterans, their spouses and children. Rogers, whose son is a Marine combat veteran, said once the student volunteers are trained, …

Rogers, who is retired from the Navy and was a Nutley Police officer for many years, led a dog rescue team in Louisiana when Hurricane Katrina devastated that state in 2005 Back at home, Rogers is recruiting volunteers to shelter and care for household pets during emergencies. The volunteers would step in when someone has to leave their home temporarily and when senior citizens cannot take care of a pet during an illness. "We were in one of the hardest hit wards," Rogers said in an interview. "The city was woefully unprepared." Having never forgotten what he saw …

Global Employee Health and Fitness Month coming to the township.
Nutley Township employees are asked to take the lead in improving fitness during Global Employee Health and Fitness Month in May. “If we’re taking a break at lunch, we’re encouraging town employees to exercise as part of that break,” said Loren McCreesh. She is helping coordinate the plan as an employee of the Department of Public Affairs. Speaking at the Nutley Board of Commissioners meeting on April 17, McCreesh encouraged the elected officials, township employees, teachers, school district staff and local businesses to recognize this wellness initiative. May is set aside for special wellness initiatives in the workplace that promote healthy living, she said. “Recognizing this designation is a natural progression for our Township,” …

Kudos to Commissioner Steven Rogers! It's wonderful that he recognizes the need and is working to make it happen. The human/animal bond runs deep, and this kind of service will help people and the animals they care about. Too often animal lovers are told that they should concentrate their energy on helping people, not animals. Steven Rogers recognizes that we do not have to choose one or the …   more ›
