NFD Awarded $31,275 Grant for Safety, Operations

Lautenberg, Menendez announce 11 fire departments in state earn funds from federal program.

The Nutley Fire Department will join 10 other state fire departments as beneficiaries of a federal grant for operations and safety, according to the offices of both New Jersey senators. Nutley’s $31,275 Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant will be used for operations and safety programs, Democratic Sens. Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez announced in a statement. “This federal funding will ensure that fire departments throughout New Jersey are well equipped and able to access the training they need to answer the call and protect the public,” Lautenberg, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which funds the AFG program, said.  “These grants play a vital role in …

Fire Crews Battling Columbia Avenue Blaze

Nutley, Belleville fire fighters respond to fire first spotted in residence's basement.

Firefighters from Nutley and Belleville are working to extinguish a fire that reportedly started in the basement of a Columbia Avenue residence shortly after noon Sunday, Nutley police said. The fire is reported to be spreading through the house, as firefighters contend with gusting winds. Fire officials believe the blaze started as a dry fire and reported no injuries in the incident. Bellevile, Nutley Assist at Bloomfield Fire Friday

Blaze started in rear first-floor bedroom in Franklin Avenue apartment building, officials said

Firefighters from all over Essex County battled a fire that broke out Friday at an apartment complex on Franklin Street in Bloomfeld. The blaze started in a bedroom of a rear first-floor apartment unit in the four-story complex, around 4 p.m, according to Bloomfield Fire Inspector Tom Wilson. By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze was "well advanced" and spread behind the wall up to the fourth floor, said Wilson. One tenant, he said, had to be rescued from a rear fire escape. At around 4:45 p.m., heavy smoke still billowed out from the first-floor window as well as from windows on floors above it. The complex, located near Berkeley Place, is split between two sides known as 210 and 214. Residents in 24 apartment units on the 210 side…

Belleville Fire Department Battles Blaze at Residence

Fire believed to have broken out on second floor

No injuries were reported in a fire Tuesday at a multistory Belleville home, fire officials said. Belleville firefighters responded to 149 Academy St. shortly after 11 am, where a fire is believed to have started on the second floor of the three-family residence. The stubborn blaze required “extensive overhaul” to put out, Deputy Chief George Pedalino said in a statement, adding that units from Bloomfield, Newark, Nutley and North Arlington also responded to the scene. At around noon, smoke could still be seen emanating from the top side windows of the home, which is just a few houses down from St. Mary and Mercurius Church. Fighting Fire with Family Fun in Nutley

Nutley Fire Department holds 30th annual open house

Several hundred people -- including lots of wee ones -- attended the Nutley Fire Department’s 30th annual Open House Friday, an event featuring lots of hands-on, kid-friendly lessons in fire safety. Children had the chance to see ambulances and fire vehicles up close, extinguish small, controlled blazes with fire extinguishers, to practice “stop, drop and roll,” and to have their pictures taken with a Dalmatian. There were also visits with Smokey the Bear and other beloved characters. Several businesses and organizations helped sponsor the event, including Nutley FMBA Local 44, the Nutley Police Department, Nutley Volunteer Emergency Rescue Squad,  American Red Cross, C. Walter Searle Insurance,  Dunkin Donuts, Energizer Batteries, Flippin…

In honor of National Fire Prevention Week, the Nutley Fire Department will be holding its 30th annual Fire Prevention Open House Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at fire headquarters, 228 Chestnut St. The public is welcome to attend and learn more about protecting themselves and loved ones from fire. A Nutley fire lieutenant hurt his knee and a family was left homeless after a fire on Funston Place. Crews from Newark and Belleville helped Nutley firefighters battle the fire last Friday at 44 Funston Place, shortly after 10 p.m, said Deputy Chief Paul Cafone.  The main body of the fire, which started in a second-floor bedroom of the one-family home, was quickly brought under control. Nutley Engines 1, 2,3 and 4, Nutley Ladder 1, as well as Belleville firefighters were all on the scene, as was Nutley Fire Capt. John Nicollette, the incident commander, and his son, Phil, who is chief of the department’s volunteers.  The Newark Fire Department was also called in to employ a “cascade system,” which can refill firefighters’ air tanks at fire…

Belleville's Superintedent Sued for Sexual Misconduct, Nutley's Tan Mom is Back and a Road Rage Incident Leads to a Stabbing

Joseph Picardo, the superintendent of Belleville’s public schools since 2010, went on paid leave after another administrator sued him for sexual misconduct. Helene Feldman was later named interim superintendent. A road rage incident in Nutley ended with a Pompton Plains man being arrested on assault and drug charges. The man, Sefer Nasufi, also allegedly stabbed the victim in a bank parking lot, police said. Nutley’s most notorious tanorexic, Patricia Krentcil, has teamed up with an author to provide online tips on proper skin care.  In one of the webisodes Krentcil gets a skin peel. Firefighters Collect Backpacks for Students

Nutley Fire Department members donate backpacks to elementary, middle and high school students just in time for the beginning of a new year.

Nutley firefighters just made the school year a little brighter for 40 local students. Members of the Firefighters Beneveloent Association 44, donated 40 new backbacks to Nutley public school students. The backpacks were filled with school supplies when they were delivered, according to Greg Misner, a Nutley firefighter. The backpacks were mostly for elementary students, but also a few for middle school and high school students, he said. Backpacks for elementary school students were given to each of the five schools to be distributed. School counselors said in a statement, "We cannot tell you how grateful and fortunate that we  are to have such caring members in our community to assist families in need."  Bill Vonroth, Don Santangelo, …
