Preservation Group Weighs in on Roche

Nutley group doesn't want apartments or condos going on 127-acre campus when Roche closes it down in a year.

Jim Levendusky of the Nutley Community Preservation Partnership wants the township and Roche officials to know his group does not want apartments, condominiums or a mix of retail stores to replace the departing drug company at its campus on Route 3. Levendusky said the more than 100-member partnership that has worked to preserve and restore Nutley's historic character for more than eight years is concerned about Roche's departure. "Everybody's minds are on the Roche property," Levendusky said. "We are not in favor of anything involving putting apartments or condos there, or a mixed use involving residential and retail stores." The property is zoned for commercial or office space use, and he said the partnership does not want to see the …

I agree, we need the tax revenue. Look what happened to ITT. Clfton built the stores, Nutley built condos and houses. Clifton has the last laugh. They got the tax revenue and Nutley got the traffic and riff raff.   more ›

10 Most-Read July Belleville-Nutley Patch Stories

Here are a few of the stories that caught readers' attention this month on Belleville-Nutley Patch.

Shoppers will no longer have to drive to Nutley or Bloomfield to get ShopRite specials, town officials announced. Kevin Kennedy, a Belleville councilman, confirmed a ShopRite is expected to take the former Pathmark space at the end of the Washington Avenue business district. Pathmark left in October 2010, and Kelly's Liquors moved into the space at 726 Washington Ave. The liquor store will now move across the hall to the left of the large shopping complex in favor of a new ShopRite, according to Kennedy. Nutley Mayor Alphonse Petracco tried to put a bright face on the impending closure of pharmaceutical giant Roche, saying it could be a “good opportunity for Nutley to come out of this with more tax revenue.”  His optimism, however, was …

Director Keeps Nutley's Recreation Budget in Line

Commissioner Mauro Tucci aims to balance keeping costs down with keeping more than 135 different programs under Nutley's recreation program.

Commissioner Mauro Tucci has directed Nutley's Department of Parks, Recreation and Public Properties since 2000, and said he wants to balance costs while keeping a recreation program that is competitive with others in the area. To do that, Tucci said he is undertaking a complete reorganization of the department, looking into each position and the dollars being spent. "We need to maximize the use of every dollar, like we've done with installing new synthetic turf at Monsignor Owens Field," he said. “That will now save us money going forward because it needs less maintenance and allows us to use the whole park as much as possible." On July 12, Nutley recreation officials broke ground on a 169,000-square-foot synthetic turf field on Owens …

Roche to Close Nutley Facility

Township officials express hope that another drug company can ease the devastation and shock of losing the largest employer and tax revenue source at the end of 2013.

The announcement that Roche Pharmaceuticals, the town's largest employer and tax revenue source, would leave Nutley Township at the end of 2013, caught town officials by shock and surprise. At a hastily-called meeting, Nutley’s mayor and a commissioner talked Tuesday night of hope for the best possible outcome, that another drug company can be lured to the huge Roche campus and fill the void the business will leave in the community. This was after an emergency meeting with a Roche official Tuesday afternoon where the devastating effect on Nutley's property tax base was discussed. Roche pays more than $9 million a year in property taxes to Nutley and has spent more than $1 million upgrading its facilities. The company has received millions …
