Crane Repairing County Building Topples

County executive says "we were very, very lucky" no injuries occurred when heavy machinery collapses into parking lot while making repairs from Hurricane Sandy to courthouse roof.

A massive crane repairing the Essex County courthouse roof toppled over around 11 am. Wednesday. No one was injured when a crane being used to repair the roof of the building collapsed and landed in the building parking lot Wednesday morning, Essex County Executive Joseph N. DiVincenzo Jr. said. “We were very, very lucky,” DiVincenzo said, “The county was off and nobody was injured.” Only a skeleton crew was working in the building at the time of the incident, he said. “It was a massive crane.” Repairs were being made to the building’s roof as well as replacing an antenna on the building for the county sheriff’s department. Sandy Outages, Passaic River Flooding In Essex

Downed wires, fallen streets wreak havoc in towns across the county.

More than 255,000 PSE&G customers in Essex County are without power Tuesday morning, in wake of Hurricane Sandy, the hybrid super storm that barreled through the region Monday night. As of Tuesday morning, PSE&G is reporting 1.4 million of its customers are affected by the outages, caused by unprecedented storm surges and the flooding of several substations. Essex County has the most outages out of Hudson (228,549), Bergen (235,683), Middlesex (211,673) and Union (179,387) counties, according to PSE&G. The widespread power outages were blamed on dangerous wind gusts and storm surges, PSE&G said, which reported flooding Monday night in substations in North Bergen (on the Hudson River), Newark (on the Passaic River) and Sewaren (on the …

Sandy Forces Closure of Essex County Offices

Officials announce county will shut buildings and facilities as storm approaches.

Essex County officials announced Sunday majority of county offices will be closed because of the Hurricane Sandy. The county announced on its website all county offices, buildings and facilities will be closed be closed tomorrow with the exception of the following departments: In addition, the Essex County Turtle Back Zoo and any events planned for the Codey Arena have been cancelled. The Codey Arena will be open tonight beginning at 7 p.m. as a county storm shelter.

Codey Arena Open as Relief Center During Hurricane Sandy

West Orange facility open to residents, pets beginning Sunday 7 p.m.

Essex County Codey Arena in West Orange will open as a relief center beginning Sunday 7 p.m. for residents during Hurricane Sandy, county officials announced. Essex County and the American Red Cross will provide bedding and water those who lose power or need to reach a safe place during the storm, expected to make landfall in New Jersey late Monday. Accommodations for pets will be provided at Codey Arena. All activities at the arena have been canceled and Essex County Turtle Back Zoo will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week. Essex County OEM Announces Cooling Center

In light of this weekend's heat, the Essex County Sheriff's department has opened this site as a cooling centers for residents.

The Essex County Office of Emergency Management is advising residents that due to extreme heat conditions this weekend, the Codey Arena at the South Mountain Recreational Complex on Northfield Avenue in West Orange will be used as a cooling center for Essex County residents.  The arena will be open on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rink at Codey Arena to Undergo Major Improvements

Construction will affect skating schedules at rink

One of the ice rinks at Essex County's Codey Arena will be getting a long overdue upgrade, county officials announced Monday. A new refrigeration system and playing surface will be installed in rink two to improve the arena's overall efficiency and provide a better skating surface for patrons, officials said. The more than $2 million project will be paid for by county's capital budget, according to Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. He said a $2 million construction contract was awarded to Colonnelli Brothers of Hackensack for construction and Becht Engineering of Liberty Corner received a $130,000 for the design.
