The Weekender: Concerts, Cards and Meetings

Plenty of activities to keep you busy on this first weekend of 2013.

Friday, 9 a.m. 44 Park Ave., Nutley The Old Guard meets weekly on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Frank A. Cocchiola Parks Building. Friday, 12:30 p.m. Franklin Avenue and Mill Street, Belleville Belleville Seniors meet every Friday, with coffee, buns and Bingo following.  The Club offers trips top Atlantic City, parties and more.  Friday, 1 p.m. Verona Community Center Annex 880 Bloomfield Ave., Verona Free  Drop in on FRIDAYS from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. to play or to socialize. Friday, 8 p.m. 1 Center St., Newark $20 Jacques Lacombe leads the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in Gustav Holst’s suite The Planets featuring the American Boychoir.  The Orchestra also performs a rarely heard work by Michael Tippet, his Symphony No. 4. Students Honored for Art Talent

Belleville art students recognized by Caldwell Teen Art Jam Contest for two- and three-dimensional creations judged by Montclair Art Museum officials.

Dozens of Belleville High School students were recognized by the Board of Education after competing in the Caldwell College Teen Art Jam Contest earlier this spring and some of the art works were chosen to be published in an art book. Student Christian Hernandez was given an award for a pastel portrait he composed of an orphaned child in Haiti. Hernandez said he learned a lot about children in poverty in other parts of the world, and was "thankful" for the award. High School Vice Principal Russell Pagano said the Teen Art Jam, "was about celebrating art." "These students shared their inspiration and creativity," Pagano said.
