No injuries were reported in a fire Tuesday at a multistory Belleville home, fire officials said. Belleville firefighters responded to 149 Academy St. shortly after 11 am, where a fire is believed to have started on the second floor of the three-family residence. The stubborn blaze required “extensive overhaul” to put out, Deputy Chief George Pedalino said in a statement, adding that units from Bloomfield, Newark, Nutley and North Arlington also responded to the scene. At around noon, smoke could still be seen emanating from the top side windows of the home, which is just a few houses down from St. Mary and Mercurius Church. Family left homeless after fire on Funston Place.

A Nutley fire lieutenant hurt his knee and a family was left homeless after a fire on Funston Place. Crews from Newark and Belleville helped Nutley firefighters battle the fire last Friday at 44 Funston Place, shortly after 10 p.m, said Deputy Chief Paul Cafone. The main body of the fire, which started in a second-floor bedroom of the one-family home, was quickly brought under control. Nutley Engines 1, 2,3 and 4, Nutley Ladder 1, as well as Belleville firefighters were all on the scene, as was Nutley Fire Capt. John Nicollette, the incident commander, and his son, Phil, who is chief of the department’s volunteers. Three young kids, a teenager and a man died in fast-moving fire that spread across several residences Friday in Newark's West Ward.
Four children were among five people who died early Friday in an apartment building fire in Newark's Vailsburg section, officials said. A 3-year-old girl, 4-year-old boy, believed to be siblings, died in a rear apartment on the third floor, while a 6-year-old girl, a teenager and a man died in the front apartment on the same floor of the Brookdale Avenue building, fire officials said. Adding an even more somber note to the tragic deaths, the mother of the two children who died in the front apartment was giving birth at a nearby hospital on the day of the fire, officials told NJ.com.
