Commission said removal of 'Sandy’ blockage will help control flooding from Third River.
Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission crews cleared a large tree from the Third River on Wednesday. PVSC members said the tree, toppled during Superstorm Sandy, had fallen across the entire width of the river, with the current forcing it to collect smaller trees, branches and debris. The PVSC crew cleared the tree with its 30-ton crane, then fed it through a wood chipper and cart off the debris. They cleared it on the recommendation of the Belleville Department of Public Works. PVSC said the blockage potential to flood the surrounding residential area, as well as the ball fields and playground at Fairway Park.

During the trial of Nutley resident Paul Bergrin, a once high-profile defense attorney now charged with murder and racketeering, a former Belleville resident testified Bergrin coerced her into giving false statements to authorities to help her father, a Bergrin client. A Nutley resident was nominated to become a commissioner of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants were awarded to groups within Belleville and Nutley as well as the communities themselves. The funding will also be used for local roadway repairs. Agency oversees Newark treatment plant
Thomas Tucci, a Nutley resident and longtime manager of the Township of Cedar Grove, has been nominated to become one of seven commissioners of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, the office of Gov. Chris Christie announced this week. The commission oversees a wastewater treatment plant in Newark that serves 2 million people in Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Hudson and Union counties. The 111-year-old agency is one of the largest of its kind in the United States. Tucci, who holds an engineering degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and a master’s in public administration from Rutgers-Newark, is also certified in public works and construction technology. Officials say it may take weeks before complete treatment of waste water resumes at PVSC
Hurricane Sandy dealt a heavy blow to the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission plant in Newark, but the facility has largely been able to continue treating effluent pumped into the region’s waterways, a spokesman for the state Department of Environmental Protection said Thursday. But federal officials also said a key indicator of the waterways’ cleanliness was still above acceptable levels, prompting a call for people to continue avoiding contact with the waters of Newark Bay and the lower Passaic and Hackensack rivers. Chris Christie is asking customers served by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) to limit water use as repairs are made to the agency’s treatment facility in Newark, which was damaged by flooding and power outages during Hurricane Sandy.
