Nutley St. Pat's Parade is March 2

Grand marshal is owner of Belleville business

The Nutley Irish American Alliance will hold its 35th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade Saturday, March 2, beginning at 1 pm.  Grand Marshal is John Kelly, the owner of JK’s Boathouse in Belleville and a longtime member of the Nutley Crew Boosters. The parade stages at Holy Family Church on Brookline Avenue and will follow a route west along Harrison Street, then north on Franklin Street past the reviewing stand at John H. Walker Middle School before ending on Chestnut Street. A post-parade party will follow at the Knights of Columbus hall, 150 Chestnut St., from 3 to 7 pm. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for children aged 12 to 18 and can be purchased by calling  Joe Milbauer at 973-626-4439. Tickets can also be purchased at the door for $…

POLL: Are You Happy With the Snow Removal in Your Town?

Nutley, Belleville, how would you rate your town's response to the first major snowstorm of the year?

Although North Jersey hardly caught the worst of it, a powerful blizzard still dumped about a foot of snow fell this past weekend throughout the region. Officials in Belleville and Nutley say they handled the inclement weather efficiently and reported no major problems, with roadways largely clear within hours of the last flake's fall. A Snowstorm Comes and Goes, Young Nutley Poet Honored

The week's top stories in Belleville and Nutley

The area experienced its first significant snowfall of the season Friday, when a massive system dumped about a foot throughout North Jersey. Although the storm forced early school closings and the cancellation of weekend activities, the worst effects were felt farther north and east. By Saturday afternoon, local roadways were largely clear and mass transit systems were back on their normal schedules.  The students at a school for special needs students in Nutley were preparing Valentine’s Day cards for their peers at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Ct., the site of December’s mass shooting. Nutley Prepping Heat Shelters

Facility will be available in event of a power outage

The Township of Nutley’s Department of Public Affairs has initiated its warming center protocol in the event winter storm Nemo causes power outages and other emergencies.   Those who may need to come to the warming center,  located at the Department of Public Affairs, 149 Chestnut St, are asked to contact the Nutley Police Department.   Police personnel will notify  staff . Be prepared to bring blankets, pillows, cell phones, and any medication you are taking.   Residents are encouraged to fully charge their cell phones now.  Also, residents are encouraged to contact the Department of Public Affairs if  medication requires refrigeration in the event of a power failure.  Township employees will come to  homes and transport  medication to …

Towns Get Large Federal Grants and Baseball/Softball Registration Underway

During the trial of Nutley resident Paul Bergrin, a once high-profile defense attorney now charged with murder and racketeering, a former Belleville resident testified Bergrin coerced her into giving false statements to authorities to help her father, a Bergrin client. A Nutley resident was nominated to become a commissioner of the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants were awarded to groups within Belleville and Nutley as well as the communities themselves. The funding will also be used for local roadway repairs. Nutley Gets $175K 'Safe Route' Grant

Funding meant to encourage students to walk, bike to school

Nutley was awarded a $175,000 grant designed to encourage grade and high school students to walk or bike to school, the state Department of Transportation announced Monday. The grant was awarded through the Safe Routes to School program, which provides funds for communities to make improvements to bike paths, crosswalks and sidewalks in order to make the trip to school safer for non-motorists. The program is also meant to promote healthy exercise habits early in youth. Belleville PD Makes Prostitution Arrests, High-Profile Trial of Nutley Resident Begins

Belleville police Thursday arrested two women for allegedly working as prostitutes out of a Washington Avenue business. The business’s owner was also charged but had not yet been arrested. A Nutley man was among those charged in a massive, $10 million mortgage fraud scheme, the US Attorney’s office announced. The scheme, carried out over four years, involved properties in Newark and Elizabeth. The trial of Paul Bergrin, a Nutley resident and prominent Newark defense attorney, began this week. Bergrin, whose list of former clients includes rap stars and alleged drug dealers  is accused of tampering with witnesses against his clients, among many other charges. Nutley Little League Registration is Sunday

League tryouts are scheduled for late next month

Nutley’s Parks and Recreation Department will be holding registrations for Little League this Sunday, Jan. 27 from noon to 2:30 at the Parks and Rec building, 44 Park Ave., Room 300. Registration is open to all students who are now in kindergarten up to those who will be younger than 13 before May 1, 2013. Youth will be assigned to one of two leagues: Nutley American League (for families residing on Prospect Street and all streets west), and Nutley East League (for families residing east of, but not on, Prospect). Cost is $85 for a single child, $135 for two children and $185 for three children. Checks should be made out to the appropriate league.
